Bruges

Back home and this is the first of what will be, I suspect, a number of holiday posts.  So feel free to skip past them.  Photos are currently on SM's phone, so will be uploaded later - SM has gone to buy food, whilst I tackle the start of the washing (as is obvious from my posting!)

We only had an overnight stop in Bruges, with the morning there before we left for Germany.  But we made very good use of our time.  Last time we were there - eighteen months ago - it was bitterly cold and snowed and we didn't take the boat trip.  This time we were able to go on one and it was really interesting.  There are so many canals and it's fascinating to see the backs of all the buildings and go underneath the bridges.  In the middle ages Bruges had a harbour and from the waterside you could really get an idea of what it would have been like.  It looks very Dutch, which it was until 1830, with the houses with their 'stepped roofs'.  I was also able to use one of my two Dutch words when I bought the boat tickets.

From there we walked through the town to the best chocolate shop.  We had hot chocolate and waffles which were wonderful.  The hot chocolate comes in the form of a large mug of hot milk, plus a chocolate shaped cup filled with chocolate buttons.  The idea is that the whole thing can be dropped into the milk.  Or, as we did, pour the buttons into the milk, which makes it quite strong enough for us, and then eat the cup separately.

After which we went downstairs and bought chocolate as presents for family and for work.  Because you can't go to Bruges without buying chocolate.
