Sam Tyler saw the gunman as soon as he rounded the corner in the warehouse.  Unfortunately the gunman saw Sam at the same time and the expression on his face showed that one lone copper was not going to prevent his escape.

Sam heard the gunshot seconds later.  He’d had no time to react, no time to shout a warning or to yell for backup; not that anyone would have heard as the others were on the opposite side of the building.

Sam put his fingers up to his shoulder, aware that he had been hit but not yet knowing how much damage had been inflicted.  He tasted the blood that trickled down his fingers, noting the slight tang of iron.

He felt the pain of the bullet wound as he sought shelter behind a pile of discarded pallets, stray nails catching his hands as he tried to staunch the bleeding.

He smelt the sawdust as he sank to the floor.

Then came a smell that wasn’t sawdust, but fags and whisky.  A smell that Sam would normally have drawn back from, but now meant help was near.

Sam felt hands gently touching his shoulder and applying pressure to the wound and then he felt strong arms around him, picking him up and holding him close.

With his head pressed against the familiar camel coat Sam could almost taste Gene Hunt as he carried him out of the warehouse.

Sam heard the Guv’s voice shouting out that he’d found him, and yelling at Chris to call for an ambulance.  He heard the siren as minutes later the ambulance arrived.

As he was laid on the stretcher before being taken into the ambulance Sam forced himself to open his eyes.  Looking up he saw his DCI standing nearby, concern written all over his face as he watched Ray shove the gunman into a car.  Sam saw the ambulance man tap Gene on the shoulder and indicate that the patient was fully conscious.  And he saw the smile that Gene gave him.
