Berlin - Day Three - Art

Our hotel was about 15 minutes walk from Museumsinsel.  There are five museums on the island in the river.  It is possible to buy a combined ticket to visit all five in one day.  We decided to choose one museum to concentrate on.  Since our preference for art is that of the 19th century, we settled on the Alte Nationalgalerie.  We spent about four and a half hours there, although that included time in the shop and having a drink and some cake.

The second photo was taken from the second floor of the museum looking towards the Dom.  The statue is of Friedrich Wilhelm IV who had the idea for Museuminsel.

As you can imagine, there were a lot of paintings, plus some sculpture.  The photos which follow are ones which particularly attracted me, not necessarily because they were 'the best' but there was something in each of them which spoke to me.

There were a number of paintings of Berlin, the first being of Unter der Linden:

There were various portraits, including musicians.  These are Liszt, playing for his friends (including a bust of Beethoven) and King Friedrich II, a gifted flautist, playing with some musicians, including C P E Bach.

And a painting of the casting of the granite bowl (seen above) - I was particularly taken by the reflections which are shown; and young ladies on a Sunday morning walk.

Sadly, that was all we got to see in Berlin, although we did have another enjoyable meal in a small bar not far from our hotel that night.
