“Sherlock, you promised me you were clean.”

“And I am, what’s the problem?”

“I walked past you when I was going to the bank. You were talking to the skinny guy outside the Chinese takeaway.”

“I know, I saw you.”

“And I heard him say ‘crack’ and ‘good quality’ and then you said that it was okay, you’d make sure you got him the cash.”

“That is because the skinny guy is a painter and decorator. I was asking him to repair the crack in the ceiling that Mrs Hudson has been complaining about. Rest assured, the only illegal act is defrauding the Inland Revenue because you’re paying him cash.”

“I’m paying him?”

“You did say you had been going to the bank.”
