Discussion : Michael Moorcock
I've discovered this author through my parents, who'd read several of his books while they were in their 20s in university - specifically the Elric and the Hawkmoon series. Of course I got curious, because my parents enjoyed those books, and despite their warning that it "probably does not hold up in 2025", I've read all of Hawkmoon (or at least, all the french translations my mom had).
It wasn't... great. Sometimes it was really really bad (the orientalism at times is... something.). But it was also really entertaining and funny. There seems to be between 2 and 50 plot points per book, which are all 200 pages or less, and Hawkmoon's chief motivation is "I want to go home to kiss my wife" which is a mood, honestly. The whole "Eternal Champion" thing in the last 3 books was a bit... not to my tastes, although there were some very fun passages of it. Overall you can tell it's old and that you could just say words back then. I wouldn't recommend this series exactly, but it's pretty fascinating. I'm considering getting my hands on Elric at some point just to see if it's the same kind of batshit.
Have you ever read a book from Michael Moorcock ? If so, what did you think ? Would you have anything to recommend ?
I'll say my favorite part of the Hawkmoon books are the giant pink flamingos from Kamarg, that are used as mounts, including during war. It is really cool to picture guys flying to combat on flamingos of all things.
Sunday Word: Clishmaclaver
clishmaclaver [klish-muh-kley-ver, kleesh-]
noun:
(Scots) gossip; idle or foolish talk
Examples:
There is more of good sense, sound judgment, truth, and good taste, in it, than in all the clishmaclaver which has been issued from the Popish presses and Jesuit quarterly reviews in the United States, during the last half century. (William Hogan, Auricular Confession and Popish Nunneries)
Noo, I’ve been a gude friend to ye always, Peter, and eef there’s iver been anything wrang, I’ve been like Sir Murray himsel’ to all ye sairvants, and paid yer wage, and seen ye raised, and that no ane put upon ye; so now tell me, like a gude laddie, has there been any clishmaclaver with Maister Norton and my laird here? (George Manville Fenn, The Sapphire Cross)
Let me insense ye how matters are on that head, for it's better coming from the factor than any clishmaclaver you'll hear in other quarters. (Sam Hanna Bell, Across the Narrow Sea)
Your letter is at hand, stating that you cannot visit me on Friday per promise, because you husband has business that keeps him in town. What clishmaclaver is this! Has it come to such a pass that you can’t leave him for two days? (Jean Webster, Dear Enemy)
Origin:
1720–30; clish(-clash) gossip (gradational compound based on clash ) + -ma- (< ?) + claver (Dictionary.com)
The usual meaning of the Scottish word clishmaclaver (also clish-ma-claver, clishmaclaiver, clashmaclaver) is 'idle talk, gossip, or empty chatter'. The OED says it was formed 'apparently with allusion to clish-clash and claver, with echoic associations', and finds it also used as a verb ('keep me clishmaclavering'). Hiberno-English has the related short form clash 'gossip' as both noun and verb. Terence Dolan notes clash in Sligo ('He’s an awful old clash'), while a century ago P W Joyce reported clashbag 'tale-bearer' or 'busybody' in Armagh, Northern Ireland. (Sentence first)

Book Bans
Another win for freedom to read legislation on the West Coast this week, as Oregon’s state House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1098 on Monday, a bill that will protect access to books in school libraries. It’s great news: books can no longer be banned solely because they discuss sexuality, religion, or other topics, nor can books be removed because they are written by someone from a protected class. SB 1098 now goes to the governor, who is expected to sign it into law.
I'm delighted to see laws against book bans spreading. To promote this, point out that it will save lots of time and therefore money that is currently wasted dealing with attempt after attempt to tell other people what books they can't read. Most people love saving time and money, and will thus support the effort even if they don't care about books or freedom.

patience in a garden plot
Got a Cake Batter cone (working my way through the non-coffee-flavors at my local ice cream shop) and walked over to the garden; I am very pleased to report that the rhubarb has come up, and so has the parsley and the cosmos and the sweet alyssum! Could there be 100% more of all of these plants, considering how many seeds I put in? Yes. But: I created plants! The basil is going to be so happy over the next week of heatwave. The peas are doing great and I am going nuts over the lack of watermelon, hopefully they will also rejoice in the heat.
And then I stuck a couple of coreopsis in the front garden, which I impulse-bought this morning at the farmer's market, not even a little sorry. Other impulse purchases today included a bag of basil (PESTO) and a container of corn salsa, which I will add to fish-stick tacos.
