Call the Midwife

Series 7 finished yesterday, with all the emotion.  I think this has been the best series yet.

***Spoilers***

Clearly Barbara's death was the worst part.  Totally heart-rending, especially as she seemed to be improving, and then there was the possibility she lose the ends of three fingers due to sepsis, which would be hard enough because she could not continue as a midwife, but then she knew she wasn't getting better after all, and we watched as Tom, her husband, and Phyllis, her best friend, sat with her during her last hours.  It was incredibly painful, and yet pitched at just the right level - I wish I could write like that.

It's so sad when a major, popular, character dies.  Yet it was entirely plausible and realistic.  Barbara had meningitis, which turned to sepsis, and yes, it could happen to anyone.  Even now, over 50 years after the date the programme is set, meningitis still strikes quickly.  Two years ago my daughter phoned to tell me about the first case of meningitis she'd had to deal with, how rapidly the rash had spread, and how she'd had to be professional on the outside, whilst panicking internally.

About one-sixth of the British population watch the show, which is impressive.  Especially for something which has a mainly female crew, is about mostly women (midwives and nuns) and deals with nursing.  And yet it's far more than a feelgood show - the issues it tackles are wide-ranging and still relevant.  It doesn't pull its punches, but at the same time ensures there are upbeat moments, and laughter - in fact just like life.  And Reggie, a young man with Down's syndrome, is played by an actor with Down's.

I was talking to my daughter last night - she'd just come off shift and was planning on catching up with the final episode.  She told me how the previous week all her friends had been sharing crying faces, so she'd known she would need to watch the episode before going into work the next day.  Because apparently everyone at Warwick Hospital watches!

The Christmas Special is just over nine months away.

It's been a wonderful series - as always! I'm not going to lie, I didn't think they would kill Barbara, especially seeing as she hasn't been in it too long and we'd just lost Trixie, albeit temporarily. I didn't actually cry when Barbara died but did shed a couple of tears in the last episode when they were showing all of the photos at Sister Monica Joan's party...
