Various Challenges and Camp Fire Singing (and Biscuits)
Last week we had a challenge event. I normally organise one a year, with the idea of four different challenges to be tackled by the Brownies in their sixes, moving round from challenge to challenge. It's quite leader intensive, because it normally requires one leader per challenge, plus one challenge which can be done by the girls without assistance.
This year was the Brownie Six Name Challenge, in which each challenge was (very) vaguely related to the name of the sixes. So we had Squirrels, with plaiting wool (to do with the tail), Hedgehogs, growing cress seeds in mini yoghurt pots (so the spikes), Badgers had a word search (black and white, like a badger), and Moles with origami (okay, that one defeats me, but I thought it would be fun). We made fish, which are very effective, but a bit fiddly especially when I'm trying to do it upside down.
The girls all enjoyed themselves, and Snowy Owl, who's from the District and provided support for this half term, was impressed with the way they rose to the challenge. And since everyone completed all four challenges - and therefore received four stars for the little challenge booklets they made - I gave them each a small animal-shaped rubber.
This week, with Glitter Owl on holiday, Snowy Owl ran the evening. We made iced biscuits in the style of a camp fire:

And sang Brownie/Guide camp fire songs. Some of which I haven't sung since TD was a guide.

Woo, those cookies look like lots of fun (and mess) to make.

The biscuits were fun - Mister Five might enjoy doing them, and Mister Three with help:
Plain biscuit (we use rich tea). And green icing (frosting) for the grass. Place chocolate for logs, leaving a space in the middle (Cadbury's flake chopped in pieces), add jelly tots for the fire, use chocolate sticks (Matchmakers) either to form a tripod or for toasting marshmallows. Lastly add mini marshmallows.

The Brownies enjoyed tackling the challenges and getting the satisfaction of completing them.
