Parliament Week 2019

Last week we celebrated UK Parliament Week again at Brownies.  Fortunately we didn't have to speak about the current state of Parliament, but did activities which related more generally to the importance of parliament.

We began with a quiz talking about famous women and the difference they can make.  We began with Florence Nightingale and Sylvia Pankhurst (or course) and finished with Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg.  Our quizes are multiple choice and the Brownies run to whichever corner they believe to be the right answer.  The pack we had included six wristbands and I awarded some of them to Brownies who knew a little more about some of the famous women.

After which they were able to take part in a ballot, with ballot papers and a ballot box.  The idea is they vote on something of importance to them, so we used the opportunity to let the Brownies vote on the theme for the spring term.  Probably inevitably the majority chose 'Brownies Have Adventures'.

Our final activity was to organise an imaginery celebration event within their sixes.  They were given a number of activities to choose from (pony rides, chocolate fountain etc), each of which was priced, and a limited amount of money and they had to select which activities to include as a group.  They responded well to the challenge, with some sixes agreeing as a group which activities they would have, whilst in others each Brownie chose their favourite activity.

This week we returned to the Be Well theme, first of all with an activity looking at feelings and good ways to respond to feelings.  The second activity was a game called Kabaddi, which Doodles and I had never heard of.  However, Flamingo had learnt it whilst she was in Afghanistan, so she was happy to teach the Brownies.  It involved a lot of noise and running around, so they were happy.

It's great the girls are learning so much from the Brownies, you're doing a wonderful job. And yes, noise and running around would make for very happy children:)

You always come up with such interesting and fun activities for them. I like how you had them run into corners as their multiple-choice "vote" - a great way to burn off energy!

The second activity was a game called Kabaddi, which Doodles and I had never heard of. Somebody wasn't watching Channel 4 in the early '90s ^____^

I really like the idea of putting together a celebration event. That sounds like an interesting activity ^__^
