Snowflake Challenge #9 - Celebrate an achievement

I am the treasurer and a trustee for a local charity in Gloucestershire called Gloucestershire Bundles.  We provide clothing, equipment and toiletries, plus bedding and toys, to families in need throughout the county.

Apart from managing the accounts for our small charity the achievement I want to celebrate is raising £60,000 in grants for them over 2022.

As far as possible we aim to give out good condition pre-loved items which are donated by the general public.  However, this is not always possible and with falling donations and growing number of requests we have been forced to buy more clothing and equipment.  Some items, like mattresses for infant beds we always provide new for health and safety reasons.  Then there's the rent of our warehouse, wages for two part-time members of staff, all the utilities ....

I remember reading about Gloucestershire Bundles from you in last Snowflake and it's fantastic it's still going so strong and helping so many people.

That is an amazing amount to raise in grants and you should be very proud.

I do tend to talk about the charity quite a bit. Yes, I am proud of my contribution, but I'm also very proud of the work we do. And the more I write, the more people will be aware of the need and hopeful a few will be in a position to support their own local baby bank.

That sounds awesome, and I can imagine just how much work it was, between *gestures at economy* and the war in Ukraine. The work you do might be unglamorous, but without you, a lot of people would be worse off.

Thank you very much. We do provide for Ukrainian refugees, but also Syrian and Afghan refugees who tend to get overlooked, for us all children are important.

I mostly thought of Ukrainian refugees because they're the bulk of new arrivals where I live, currently (over 1 million in the whole country). But of course all refugees are important. I wish we had something more to donate, but we already gave away our old stuff during the 2015 crisis.

I'd say the Ukrainians are also the ones we receive most requests for. At the same time, they are generally better supported, both by communities and government, whereas the others have more of a struggle (less public sympathy) and are more likely to be ignored.

that's a big chunk of change! definitely something to pat yourself on the back for. i remember you mentioning gloucestershire buddies a couple snowflakes ago (unless it was last year and i just have no concept of the passage of time) and i thought it was such a nice idea back then, and i still do.

I do tend to mention Gloucestershire Bundles at least once during Snowflake, I'm very proud of all they do, and also think it's something people don't necessarily think about.
