Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

Going to The Daughter's graduation from Birmingham City University at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Which might sound like a normal experience, but:
Instead of taking A-levels (the academic post-16 route in England), she went to college and gained a BTEC National Diploma in Outdoor Activities (with 3 distinctions)
She then trained as a paediatric nurse, getting a 2:2 degree from Coventry University
Then, eleven years later, having changed career and taking a block release degree, so working as an Ambulance Technician/Student Paramedic at the same time, she gained a First Class degree in Paramedic Science.

Hence the joy!

Last Friday I went up to London to see the latest production of New Adventures (Sir Matthew Bourne's company) Swan Lake.  It was excellent.  It's impossible for me to pinpoint exactly what it was which made it so good, but it was a combination of the dancing (as wonderful as ever), the story, the music, the costumes and the scenery.  The characters come over so clearly and really convincingly.  I last saw this in December 2018 and if anything I enjoyed it even more this time.

Normally J comes with me to these performances, but this time he didn't, since he'd already seen it once.  I wasn't daunted by already knowing how things worked out (and in fact I'd forgotten some of the smaller points) so went ahead on my own.  And six years later with a different cast it still had real power and maybe because it wasn't so strange as the first time I'd seen it (over the years I had seen a good number of classical versions) maybe why I did enjoy it more.

And, because the challenge for Snowflake #9 was to create a fanwork, I wrote a ficlet: Swan Lake

Today's Challenge is to talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

That has to be the number of friends I've made.  Some have moved on, but I remain friends with them.  Some I see in real life, some I only ever contact via the internet.

Because of those friends I've read some different books, and learnt about life in different parts of the world - not just the bits which are featured in the news, but the more mundane everyday lives which most people live.  I've received more cards than I would have received, for Christmas, birthdays and at other times.  And I've shared good times and bad times.

Without fandom, the Ferret would never have strutted his stuff on the stage, and werewolf!Lucas would have missed out on all the parties.

Today's challenge is to set some goals.  I'm still setting my goals in April, since I find it a more realistic time to do so, and therefore I'm using this post to review my current goals at their eight month point:

Goal 1: To do something new each month
September was a busy month generally, so the best I can offer is visiting the church's antiquated boilers, which was an experience.  October we went on holiday and visited Chester and Llandudno, both new places.  November I tried a new online book club.  And December was ridiculously busy, so there wasn't much time to include new things.  I had been going to go to a decoupage class at our local library, but due to problems on the roads the tutor didn't make it.

Goal 2: To do a monthly review
This is going very well and may well influence what I choose for next year's goals.

Goal 3: To complete a bigger knitting project
As previously mentioned, the really impressive projects cost more than I can justify.  I finished my sleeveless top ready for next summer and I've just started a jumper, although that may not be completed by the end of April.

I am also planning on having some more minor goals, and am therefore doing 25 things in 2025.  My first six 'things' are listed here

Tell Us about a Personal Win. Share whatever wins you’re comfortable with telling us all about. Found a new fandom that makes you light up? One of your creations has earned more kudos than you dreamed of? Wins from life, new job, new school, new adventure? You have a couple of wins you want to celebrate, we want to hear about them. Share a win or two so we can cheer for you.

First up, I successfully applied for £50K worth of grant funding for Gloucestershire Bundles, which makes a significant difference to the charity.

Secondly, I cross stitched 24 cards for people this Christmas - some of which you can see here.

Five Things! The five things are totally up to you.

So, five Sir Matthew Bourne New Adventures productions:

1)  Edward Scissorhands - which we saw last month

2)  Romeo & Juliet - which we saw in August

3)  Sleeping Beauty - which we watched on television on Christmas Day (and saw December 2022)

4)  Swan Lake - which is coming again next December (and we saw in December 2018)

5)  The Midnight Bell - which we saw the world premiere of in September 2021

Rec us your newest thing

This year I've decided to use some of the questions [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi has created on a semi-regular basis and which I'm tentatively calling Three Questions and here are my first three answers:

2 Jan: World Introvert Day: How introverted are you? Does it change based on your surroundings?
I'm definitely an introvert, although many who know me in real life are surprised when I tell them. Yes, I talk to people, I even give talks in front of groups, but that's all the clothing I put on. Too many for too long and I retreat.

6 Jan: Sherlock Holmes’ Birthday: If you have one, what’s your favorite adaptation of Sherlock Holmes?
My favourite has to be the original, as created by ACD. I like the Granada version and sometimes use parts of BBC Sherlock, although I abandoned the main story part way through. And of course, there's my own adaptation, involving Ferret, Mouselet, Aemelia Vole, Ocelot, Sloth and Poley the Moley.

10 Jan: Houseplant Appreciation Day: What kind of houseplants do you have in your home?
We have a large umbrella plant, which lives on the sideboard and is aiming for the ceiling.

My main fandom remains Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.  However, this year I'm going to again promote the works of Sir Matthew Bourne.

And in particular the production we saw last month of Edward Scissorhands

Have a photo:

1. Something your favorite character would like: Chocolate
2. Something that makes you laugh:  We flooded the church hall kitchen this afternoon, splashing through the water made me laugh
4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet:  Clearly [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi
5. Something you find comforting:  My bee throw
7. A piece of clothing you love : The dark blue top which was a Christmas present from The Daughter
8. A book or song with a colour in the title:  The Red House
9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand:  My Sloth cookie cutter

Tell you about myself? Well, I'm different things to different people. Multi-faceted. But not contradictory - each of the facets makes up the whole. The one aspect that characterises them all is my aim to see the positive.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up.” Stephen Hawking.

Set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I don't set my major goals in January, but April, so I'm using this as an occasion to do an eight month review of my 2023/24 goals.

My minor goals are my Goodreads Challenge of 75 books and Writing wordage of 115K-120K for the year.

Looking at the equivalent post from last year I see that I also aimed to complete my cross stitch of J H Dearle's Golden Lily and start Klimt's The Kiss.  So here they are:

Goal review:

1.  To complete all FutureLearn courses on my wishlist
Going really well, there are only three remaining, none of which are currently available.  I have added two since, but that's okay, as I'd like to keep doing some.  However, my OpenLearn list is now growing with eight courses now on the list, including one I've just started.  As five of these are badged courses they will take me to the end of 2024.  I don't think this is quite as bad as it seems because I'm looking at the back catalogue and new courses aren't added that often.  Also, I've discovered an interest in science so I've branched out from history/languages/literature and therefore there is more to choose from.

2.  To reduce the number of tours on my Leger wishlist, either by having been on them or by having booked them
Two are booked for May and June, and the only other one doesn't appear to be running at the moment.

3.  To do something slightly different each month
November I took an online course over Zoom and December has to be the various church activities

I set my goals during April, so the first half is more of an update, but I've added a note of my aims for 2023 in various areas as well. [community profile] snowflake_challenge

Goal No 1: To use dates without specific commitments profitably

As I said in my October review, this was set when I expected more free days each week.  Now, I normally have one day during the week without specific commitments, plus some Saturdays.  Which means that my weekday is used for catching up, generally admin tasks, and extra writing/course following/crafting.  Saturday is more of an unstructured day, as suits the weekend.

Goal No 2: To do a couple of extra crafting activities a month (or one large one)

Having spent the autumn months on Christmas crafting of various sorts, I now have rather less to do.  Not that I'm forced to do crafts, but there is an attraction to stitching cards, knitting little presents etc.  I was given a papercraft kit for Christmas and I'm working at that, which currently counts.

Goal No 3: Continue updating my blog posting

Snowflake has been good for this, but I think I shall just ease back on little so I don't feel obliged to post.

All of these goals are somewhat vague, so as I start to consider what I might decide on for goals from the beginning of May, I think one of my aims will be to set more tangible goals.

My other aims are:
  • Written word count for the year of 115,000
  • Goodreads challenge of 75 books read
  • Complete the J H Dearle Golden Lily cross stitch which I began at the beginning of the month and start Klimt's The Kiss

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge says: Talk about your favorite trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

I have, as many of my friends know, a competency kink.  I don't expect my characters to be perfect at everything, but I do like them to be good at their job.  (I also like people in public office to be good at their job, but that's another matter entirely!)  They don't need to be wonderful at all aspects, being competent means recognising when another member of the team can do something better than you and letting them get on with it.  However, my kink also requires not just my character, but some of those around to be able to do their job, rather than the drama coming because my character is the only competent person; the drama should come from external causes.

I used to volunteer as a Brownie Guide leader (retired last summer) and within our pack (unit) we all had our own strengths and weaknesses.  But we were competent and worked together and the girls had a good time.

It was with competency in mind that I created a new character when I was writing Lewis fics.  DI Garrett first appeared in The Last Man Standing Just Got Felled By A Lion and I liked him sufficiently to let him stay and progress to a DCI.

I also transported ACD's Sherlock Holmes stories Stanley Hopkins into BBC's Sherlock, where Hopkins is a DI with the Met River Police.  He's a stickler for health and safety, not unreasonably given the nature of the River Thames, plus the fact that that police force is responsible for abseiling down buildings when required.  River Police

I am the treasurer and a trustee for a local charity in Gloucestershire called Gloucestershire Bundles.  We provide clothing, equipment and toiletries, plus bedding and toys, to families in need throughout the county.

Apart from managing the accounts for our small charity the achievement I want to celebrate is raising £60,000 in grants for them over 2022.

As far as possible we aim to give out good condition pre-loved items which are donated by the general public.  However, this is not always possible and with falling donations and growing number of requests we have been forced to buy more clothing and equipment.  Some items, like mattresses for infant beds we always provide new for health and safety reasons.  Then there's the rent of our warehouse, wages for two part-time members of staff, all the utilities ....

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge asks about resources, spaces and communities.

So [community profile] ushobwri is a twice weekly (and daily during NaNo) community encouraging people to write, and commiserating when they don't.  Very low key, no obligation to achieve goals.  Be cheered on for writing and offered understanding when life takes over.  Sometimes resorts to inviting everyone into a blanket fort.

[community profile] fan_flashworks is a multi-fandom flash community.  Every ten days (approximately) - three a month there is a new prompt and creators (writers, artist, bakers, crafters) are invited to produce something for that prompt.  It does have a strict closing date, but every six challenges is Amnesty, so work not finished in time can be posted later.  Great for keeping the muse ticking over - drabbles and short poems are just as welcome as much longer works.

[community profile] drabble_zone weekly (Saturday) prompt for drabbles (100 words) and double drabbles (200 words).  Again multi-fandom or none, perfect for trying out a few words on a new fandom and great for just getting something out there.  Every tenth week is an Amnesty.

I adore Sir Matthew Bourne's New Adventures dance company and their productions.  It's not traditional ballet, although it incorporates certain moves.  It's highly professional (in a positive sense), the dancers, costumes, set and lighting all combine into the production, so it's enjoyable just to watch of itself.

But above all, it's story telling.  Maybe not everyone in the audience takes away exactly the same story, but that's what good story telling is all about, speaking to each person as an individual.  And it is the dance equivalent of fan fiction - it takes a well-known story: Swan Lake/the Nutcracker/Sleeping Beauty etc, and retells it, in the same way many here write AUs - only on a considerably grander scale.

On top of which the company is keen to develop young talent, and has various schemes in place, works with both school children and older people in homes, because their view is that dance is for everyone and is first and foremost to be enjoyed.

And here is the official promotional footage of their current production of Sleeping Beauty:

Share a favorite memory about fandom

Fandom is all about friends - online friends who distance means I'm less likely to meet, and those who I have met.  So a shout out to all of you!  These are friends who I've met because of a particular fandom and yet the friendship has progressed well past the starting point and I value you all the more for that reason.

My favourite single memory will be the one I always mention, because it's unlikely to be surpassed.  Going to Meiringen in Switzerland at the beginning of May one year with seven other Sherlock fans.  We visited the Reichenbach Falls and commemorated Sherlock Holmes' death at the hands of Professor Moriarty.

It's the only time I have been to Switzerland and I really loved seeing somewhere so different - snow in May!  Mountains.  Waterfalls.

Celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

I took early retirement - that went very well!

I became Treasurer and a Trustee for the charity I was volunteering with Gloucestershire Bundles and my grant applications raised a significant amount of money for the charity.

And I've written some ficlets which have made a few people smile, which always makes me happy too.
