Fannish Fifty: Wyndham and Bannerjee
Jun. 8th, 2023 07:21 pmAnother mystery series set in India, this time in the early 1920s. Captain Sam Wyndham comes out to Calcutta after WWI to work for the Calcutta police. At the same time he frequently comes up against Section H, who are the military section responsible for keeping Calcutta under order when there is a significant protest about British rule. He is assisted by his Indian sergeant Bannerjee, one of the few Indians to be recruited into the CID.
The books are written by Abir Mukherjee and again give an insight into the India of that period, showing in particular how the Raj are desperately holding onto their position.
I held off reading these for some time, and don't feel they're as good as some of the other books based in India. There are five in the series, and I have just finished Smoke and Ashes, the third one. One thing to be aware of is that some of the incidents did not occur at the time the books are set, although they are included as if they did.
