smallhobbit: (Christmas Tree 2024)
Long term readers of my journal will know that every year I offer to write ficlets for friends for posting on the Twelve Days of Christmas, so starting on 26 December and running through to 6 January.  And that is my intention this year as well.

Everyone is welcome to make a suggestion, with fandom, character(s) and prompt, although given the way my brain works the result may not be quite as expected, for which I make no apology.  I shall be posting on AO3 and if you look over there you can see which fandoms I write in Small_Hobbit  If there's nothing there which appeals, I will also write an original ficlet.

So please don't be shy, but make your requests!

Yes, it's that time of year again!

If you would like me to send you a Christmas card, please drop a note in the comments, which will be screened, with your name and address.  That is your postal name, unless you wish the card addressed to 'Twinkle Toes'.

Alternatively, if you would like an online card, then let me have your email address.

You are of course very welcome to have both.

And if you've received a card from me in the past you may receive one again this year anyway.

Yes, I do know it's only the middle of November, but this will allow for last posting dates, the vagaries of my and your postal systems, and the need for me to get to the Post Office.

Over the years I've been to various exhibitions where I've bought postcards, sometimes in packs.

If anyone would like a postcard from either of these packs, please drop a comment (which are screened), including your address, unless you're sure I already have it.  I'm happy to send postcards anywhere in the world, although it may be a few weeks before you receive one as I shall have to get to the Post Office and then we rely on our various postal services.

As part of my final Fannish 50 batch celebrating Friends, I thought it would be interesting to share a bit about myself.  But I decided not to do the usual 'ask me anything' sort of question.  Instead, give me a year and I will try to tell you something about it that is relevant to me.  If it's a year I've actually lived through then it will hopefully be more personal (assuming I can remember!) and if not I'll see if I can find a connection of some kind, although the further back into history you go, the more general the answer may become.

I've no idea how this will work, or whether it will work at all, but I can but try!

One of the great things about fandom life is the friends one makes.

And so, to tie in with my drabble theme this year, I am offering to write a drabble for anyone who comments this month with a fandom, character/pairing, short prompt.  Have Fun!

One of Miss Marple's strengths is how she relates larger matters to smaller ones.  She's well known for comparing a criminal with someone she's met in her village of St Mary Mead, but also her larger reflections on life frequently tie up with the small things.

Miss Marple wandered round her garden, secateurs in hand.  It had been another very hot day, too hot to go out in the afternoon, but the evening, although still warm enough for her to be without a cardigan, was very pleasant and she enjoyed the opportunity to wander around.  She tutted at the number of roses that had shed their petals and briskly chopped the heads off; the heat was affecting them too.  And by removing those blooms which were over, there was space for new flowers to blossom, which was true in life and not just in the garden.

smallhobbit: (Cup 1)
Miss Marple is great friends with Dolly Bantry and also her husband Arthur.  Dolly features in several of my fics and Arthur also turns up from time to time.  While Miss Marple likes her garden, Dolly is an even keener gardener, so flowers frequently play a part.

“Thank you so much for a delightful evening,” Miss Marple said to her friends Dolly and Arthur Bantry.  “It has been lovely sitting outside in the glorious weather we’re having.”

“It’s the least we could do, after you exonerated the maid from stealing George’s money.  I shall sleep easy tonight knowing I didn’t falsely accuse her.”

“Yes, the poor girl was so easily taken in by his outward appearance.  Just like some of these modern roses, all beautiful blossoms but absolutely no scent.”

“And I will have neither scentless roses nor feckless young men in my garden,” Dolly said firmly.

Miss Marple is very observant and often picks up on small things which escape the attention of others, especially those which escape the authorities, particularly Inspector Slack, who is rarely pleased to hear from her, although he knows her information will be of value.

Miss Marple walked back to her cottage in a thoughtful mood.  It seemed a shame to spoil such a beautiful evening, which was still so warm she scarcely needed the cardigan she had draped over her shoulders.  Would it have been easier if it had been cold and wet?  Probably not.  Reluctantly she entered her home and took up the telephone receiver, to inform Inspector Slack that Alice Weatherall was wearing one of the rings stolen from Hambury House.  The poor girl wasn’t to know her fiancé had chosen the engagement ring as part of his spoils from the robbery.

smallhobbit: (Cup 1)
Miss Marple is very astute and yet also very caring.  While she heartily disapproves of those who take advantage of others, she believes in supporting those who are in need of help, which is often the young women, who in her day are often pushed to the background and their wishes ignored.

It was so pleasant, Miss Marple thought, taking a stroll through the hotel grounds just as the sun was setting. The view of the lake which reflected the changing colours of the sky was a sight she believed she would never tire of seeing.

Her companion, it seemed, was similarly affected. “Oh, Miss Marple,” the young woman said, “that is just stunning. Thank you so much for insisting I accompany you. And,” she sniffed and paused to wipe her eyes again, “for stepping in when Gerald started to threaten me. I should never have agreed to come away with him.”

Another favourite of mine is Miss Jane Marple, Agatha Christie's elderly spinster, frequently overlooked and yet very insightful.  This month I've decided to look at a few aspects of Miss Marple, and will be sharing the drabbles I've written as part of this month's [community profile] small_fandoms Evening Sunset challenge.  Here she is out in her garden.

It had been a hot day and Miss Marple had waited until the evening had cooled before taking a stroll around her garden.  A rustling in the bushes had her scurrying back for her torch; she doubted it was anything sinister, but it was as well to be sure.  Clutching her torch in one hand she returned and listened carefully.  There was more rustling, but a little further along the garden.  Cautiously she shone her torch along the bushes and smiled as she spotted an adult hedgehog, followed by three small babies.  Here were intruders she was happy to encourage.

If the Swan is shown all in white, then the Stranger has to be completely clothed in black.  He makes a dramatic entrance into the ball, and he becomes the centre of attention.  And from now on, tragedy is inevitable.

As soon as the Stranger entered the ballroom the Prince knew him to be the Swan, his Swan.  And yet there was no sign of recognition on his face; if anything, his glance was contemptuous as he swept past him and looked at the others who were gathered there.  The Prince watched as the Stranger strode onto the dance floor, followed by many of the men, and selected a partner from amongst the women.  The Prince wanted to protest, but the man’s arrogance intimidated him and he watched from the shadows, as the Stranger dominated the dance and the dancers.

The swans are very impressive and convey the power of a swan, with several of the movements taken directly from those of a swan and in particular the agressive nature of a male swan when his family are present.  And while the Prince is the main character in this version, it's the Swan's presence which dominates whenever he is on stage.

The Prince had watched transfixed as the swans left the lake and created beautiful patterns on the grass in front of him.  And then the Swan, the chief swan, had joined them and somehow he had been welcomed into their midst.  He tried to capture the moment, that indescribable point when he was gathered up within the Swan’s wings and for the first time he felt safe and loved.  This was what he had always wanted and never found until in the middle of these feathered beauty.  He sensed the power around him and the freedom to finally be himself.

The Queen is not interested in the Prince at all.  Her only concern is to the way the palace is run and her own likes.

Her son seemed to be saying something to her, but she turned away, there were other matters to deal with and she didn’t have time for his whining.  She snapped her fingers, and a servant was by her side ready to obey her instructions without a second’s hesitation.  If only the Prince would do the same.  He continued to seek her attention, but she strode away from him, smiling to greet various dignitaries being presented to her.  The Prince’s wants, as if he could want for anything, were meaningless compared with her goal of maintaining the continuation of the dynasty.

The Prince's Girlfriend is clearly not of the right social strata to become the future queen, which is why there is a ball coming up from at which the Prince is going to choose a wife; one approved by the Queen. The Girlfriend will be going but yet again she will stand out like a sore thumb.

She knew she didn’t fit in. She applauded at the wrong moment, failed to understand the plot in an opera in a language she didn’t speak, when those around her had grown up learning the stories, she dropped things and stopped to pick them up herself, rather than waiting for a servant to retrieve them. But she also knew she might be the Prince’s current girlfriend, but the Queen had no intention of letting them marry. So she was going to enjoy every moment of it while she could, not caring if they were laughing at her behind her back.

Sir Matthew Bourne's version of Swan Lake is known as the one with the male swans.  And in Pride Month it seems appropriate to be celebrating a dance production where a gay relationship is central to the story.  I first saw the production in December 2018 and have a ticket to see the new production in January 2025.

The drabbles this time are all ones which I used for the Moods challenge on [community profile] lands_of_magic

Beginning with the Prince, who is lonely and feels manipulated by those around him.

For a while he stood in the nightclub, completely unrecognised by the other clubbers.  He had thought that was what he wanted, somewhere to be himself and not Your Royal Highness, but nothing in his training had covered how to introduce himself to a stranger, for everyone was introduced to him.  And it didn’t take him long to realise that a night club wasn’t the place to go by himself, for everyone else either came with a group or had arranged to meet friends there.  Despondent he left and headed for the lake, which had always been his ultimate destination.

Of all the Spooks 'verses I've written Lucas the Werewolf has to be my favourite.  Lucas was deliberately turned while in the Russian jail, but with the support of Section D, and in particular Adam's assistance, he remains a valuable part of the team.

The werewolf loves a good party, and is very fond of his food.  In his lupine form he resembles a large dog, with a luxuriant coat, which gives him the ability to get closer to people who would otherwise be suspicious, but are unaware of the transmitter in the smart collar he's wearing.  Harry Pearce isn't as sure of the werewolf, who he suspects might be deliberately winding him up, but is unable to do anything about it.

The werewolf sat quietly and watched as the various party guests mingled.  He looked longingly at the buffet table on the far side of the room, but knew he had to stay where he was.

Suddenly an altercation arose and, at the same time across the room someone collapsed, bleeding profusely.  Quickly, the werewolf made for the open doors leading into the garden and collided with a small man, knocking him over, causing him to drop a knife.  The werewolf stood guard, waiting for help, and in the meantime, relieving the man of the sausage roll from his other hand.

I began my Love In All Seasons 'verse when [community profile] story_works had an amnesty challenge and I selected 'Love Springs Forth' - which also solved the problem of what to call the first in what became a series: Love Springs Forth.  I changed the timeline, so that Lucas and Adam first meet at the end of the 1960s, and their relationship blossoms until the late 2000s, when they are happily retired together.  Apart from writing various retirement stories, mainly for [community profile] allbingo 's regular Winterfest in July challenge, I also like to look at different aspects of life for them through the decades.

Adam raised a glass to Lucas who was sitting on the other side of the table in the restaurant, and said, “To us!”

“To us!” Lucas replied.  “It’s been an amazing forty years.”

“I must say Little Venice has changed quite a lot since we first came here.  If it wasn’t for the canal, I’m not sure I would recognise it now.”

“And we, of course, haven’t changed a bit.  Well, except for the grey hair and not striding out quite as far.”

“And the inability to run for a train.”

“That too.  But our love hasn’t changed.”

“Only deepened.”

I originally began my A New Start series back in late 2015.  Lucas is sent for de-briefing following his time in prison in Russia to the same facility where Adam is having rehabilitation following the loss of part of his leg after the explosion.  They get together and slowly begin to build a new life.  In this 'verse, Lucas never goes back to Section D, but instead finds a role in another section.  When Lucas moves in with Adam and his son Wes, Wes' grandparents take exception to Lucas and the relationship and for some years they remain at a distance.  Following a few years' break I picked up the story again, in December 2022, when Wes' grandfather dies and Pamela, his grandmother, becomes more accepting of Lucas and his relationship with Adam and Wes.  This year I've again returned to the 'verse, and begun to look at Pamela's new start, both from her viewpoint and also from Lucas'

Pamela sat in the lounge in Adam and Lucas’ house and looked across at them.  “I imagine you are thinking what my other friends are thinking, ‘is she making the right decision?’  Well, let me assure you, I am.”

Lucas smiled at her.  “I, for one, have no doubts about it.  I know from my own experience how difficult it can be to make the jump into something new and how tempting it is at times to retreat back into yourself, but,” he reached over and took Adam’s hand, “the benefits outweigh the doubts.”

“And I second that,” Adam agreed.

smallhobbit: (Lucas 2)
Being a distressed Sentinel fitted perfectly into Lucas coming back from Russia and naturally Adam needed to be his Guide.  It's not a genre I'm particularly knowledgeable, which means my own version veers from the standard, but aims to make sense in its own 'verse.  Lucas' spirit animal is Martha a small tabby cat, while Adam has Thomas, a larger black cat.  Adam's son Wes, also has a spirit animal (since Wes is growing into a Guide), Hector, who began as a guinea pig, but has grown into a capybara.  I haven't written in this series for a while, but intend to continue with it.

The series can be found here: A Sentinel amongst the Spooks

The team from Section D entered the basement room and looked at the chaos.

“What can you tell me?” Ros asked.

Lucas stood still and his breathing quickened.  Firmly, Adam took him by the shoulders, turned him round and led him back up the steps, calling, “I’ll let you know when I can.”

They found somewhere quiet to sit and after a few minutes, Lucas gave himself a shake and said, “They knew we were coming.  Some of the mess is unintentional, but some deliberate to confuse, and to overpower my senses so I can’t pick out what we need.”

smallhobbit: (Lucas 3)
This month's batch of Fandom 50 entries are all based around Spooks (MI5) and I shall be highlighting some of my favourite AUs.  Most of my long time readers will know that Lucas North is my favourite character and what I write is tied into Series 7 and 8 of the programme.  Therefore the characters I choose are Lucas, Adam Carter, Ros Myers, Jo Portman, Malcolm Wynn-Jones and Harry Pearce.

So, beginning with a standard Section D operation:

“I think we’ve got him.”  Lucas was watching a live feed of a suspected mole.  “He’s going to find it hard to explain why he was meeting the Russian diplomat in quite such a covert manner.”

Lucas watched as the two departed and a couple of women who were walking past stopped while one checked her phone.  The other reached into a litter bin and retrieved a small item.

“Ros has the recorder.”

“I’ve just heard from Harry,” Malcolm said.  “He’s going to meet our mole, while Adam will discretely suggest the diplomat leaves the country sooner rather than later.”
