Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them.  Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?

My good friend [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi sends Lucas North, because she thinks he needs some friendly company and feeding up, just so long as it isn't eggs.  Just as I'm wondering how best to respond to Lucas, there's another knock on the door and I find [personal profile] debriswoman has sent along the Ferret because it's well known that I can't resist a good ferret story.  And shortly after that zombie!Dr Watson arrives, as [personal profile] scfrankles still hasn't forgiven me for spending the whole of one July in killing him off.

We all sit around the table and have a wonderful chat.  Lucas and zombie!Watson depart feeling much better about themselves and the Ferret has sold several tickets to his latest show, so he's perfectly happy as well.

Day 10: Drop your OTP or small ensemble from the fandom they're in into another fandom - how do they do?

The members of Call the Midwife would cope admirably and do their best to organise everyone they came into contact with.  Those from Hamlet would have varying degress of success and Gertrude and Ophelia would take every opportunity to improve their lives and refuse to be undropped.

Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

The behaviour/attitude of a cast member could push me away from their part of the canon, but fanon would remain because if they exhibited such views in my fic they'd be out.  Lack of interest normally is what stops me getting into a fandom.

Day 12: Who is someone that you share the most fandoms with?

I wouldn't say I share a lot of fandoms with anyone, although [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi and I spend most time together in fandoms.  Different friends have different subsets in common with me.  And interestingly one of my main links is crafting, which could almost be another fandom.

Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

You do your thing, I'll do mine.  I may not read what you produce but that doesn't reflect on your choices.

Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

The Hour.  A two series British programme which ended on a cliff-hanger and then wasn't renewed when the expectation had been it would.

Day 17: Do you prefer art, fic, or vids?  Why?  Bonus: If someone was to give you a fandom gift, what format would it be?

Fics, although I like art and vids.  As a fandom gift I always prefer fics.  I've received some great art, [personal profile] kat_lair made an awesome book cover for one of my Lewis fics, but I have a very clear mental idea of how people/things/places should look and an artist may not produce the same (since they can't see into my head).  For me vids are all about the music, and if I don't like the music, even if I like the pictures I'll back out rapidly.

Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?

Lucas North's love of cake - not proven although we do see an earlier meeting where he's eating doughnuts.  Similarly he owns a lot of books, which is probably pure deduction from his character - he is a polymath.  And sometimes he's a werewolf...

No, Days Five to Seven don't exist, you haven't missed anything.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

I do like crack!fic and very happily write it.  In fact, at times I've been encouraged to write it [personal profile] brumeier I'm looking at you!  The Air Balloon Debate is written from the POV of a hot air balloon and features two parrots called Sherlock and John.

One caveat I have is that the crack!fic must conform to its own internal logic.  However, once that's fulfilled then the world is your oyster, or indeed a consultation by mirror Tigger Holmes and the Case of the Unexplained Soldier

Many of the works the Ferret is involved with could be termed crack: The Coat of Many Colours  And there's werewolf!Lucas, who loves parties: Lucas' Birthday Cake

Lastly, I do like a fic where the main characters end up as rabbits. As apparently do my readers, since this is my fourth most kudosed fic: Gandalf's Small Mistake

Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?

Why am I the Small Hobbit?  This is because, according to The Daughter, I am a hobbit, being about six inches shorter than the rest of the family.  No, I am not a short woman, but the other three are all about six foot.  In fact Daughter was banned by Son from wearing heels to his wedding so that his little sister would not be taller than him.  Yes, they are both taller than their father.

The Daughter is also responsible for my Brownie name of Screech Owl, because she got all the brownies at the time to vote for it.

For those of you who also know me on Twitter/Instagram the name I use there is that of my maternal grandmother, although a slightly different spelling.  A woman who deserves to be remembered (it's her maiden name), because when she married in the early 1920s she regretted having to give up work as was expected at the time - her husband went on to become a headmaster.  And when she could have a bank account of her own she chose a bank at the far end of the high street from where her husband's bank was.

Day 3: What's a favourite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?

Firstly, I've made friends with lots of people I'd never have known otherwise, which is great.

My main jumping off point (although that, given the fandom, is not necessarily the best phrase) came in the heady days of BBC Sherlock.  Some people organised a picnic one summer in Regent's Park, and I went along, very unsure - I am old enough to be some of their mothers - but it was good fun and I made some friendships which continue to this day.

For a start, there's Vix, a violinist, whose parents live not that far from us, and whose music group Tewkesbury Camerata held three concerts a year (pre-covid) which we always went to when we could.  My second to last theatre trip last year was with her and two of her friends to see Richard Armitage in Uncle Vanya.

Of the others there were a core group who I got to know and met up with them at various Sherlock meet-ups for a number of years.  Eight of us went to Switzerland one May and visited the Reichenbach Falls, site of the original Conan Doyle's Holmes apparent death.  I'm still in touch with many of them, and last year went up to London in early March to celebrate the birthday of two of them with a meal and going to see a play at the Globe Theatre.  That was my last time in London and the last play I have seen.

Day 2: You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them?

My current OTPs are Lucas North/Adam Carter from Spooks, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson from ACD Holmes (retirement era) and Sherlock Holmes/Stanley Hopkins from BBC Sherlock (my river police 'verse).  None of them, for me, would work with a third.

Which isn't to say they don't have friends, but none would make it to a relationship in the OT3 sense.  But then a lot of the OTP I'm writing is more background within my fic than the focus point.

The closest I've ever managed to an OT3, was for Winnie-the-Pooh, where I sometimes write fic of a more adult content - or at least not quite the same as the books you loved in your childhood.  [So be warned.]  I can't find it now, but I did write for a prompt in which someone had 'outed' Piglet.  Owl was trying to explain to Pooh why Piglet would have to leave the Hundred Acre Wood, and when Pooh finally understands he exclaims that he and Piglet have a wonderful relationship and sometimes Tigger joins them as well.

As part of my goal for this year to expand my journal a bit, I'm taking part in The June Something as run by [personal profile] squidgiepdx   The full list of questions are here, but don't expect me to answer them all, because that ain't the way I roll.

Day 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

Probably not a lot.  I've a few new friends on DW, mostly craft related rather than specifically fandom.  I'm probably writing less fanfic, but I've said elsewhere the crafting has increased.  And I've joined Shedunnit, which could be called fandom for Golden Age crime novels, so there's more Miss Marple in my output.

I suppose my fandom life is more about the people I interract with rather than the specific fandoms.  Those maybe have changed a bit over the year, but I like to think of us as all sticks in the river, flowing along in the same direction but sometimes one moves faster than another and then we catch up again.
