Definitely read some Terry Pratchett - just don't start with the first two Discworld novels - even Pratchett agrees there. I would suggest "Guards! Guards!" which is the first of the City Watch series (my favourite series). Alternatively "Mort" (Death series) or "Equal Rites" (Witches series).
