Painting Like Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was famous for splattering his canvases with paint, which is what we got to do yesterday.  All great fun.

I began outside in a quiet area close to the pond:



which was particularly pleasant since everyone else started off indoors.

After a practice on a sheet of paper:

   

I put my cotton bag on the back of a chair



and began to paint it

   

Bag decorated on both sides, (and the seat of the chair) I headed back indoors, pausing to watch the mother moorhen feeding her chick



Once inside I worked on a tree, using a tapping motion rather than full arm waving 



And tried out the same technique and basic picture on a piece of fabric



Before adding more paint onto the original picture on paper



And surprisingly, apart from getting some paint on my hands, I didn't get messy!

Lovely! The trees are particularly pretty! What sort of paints did you use?

Thank you - I was pleased with the trees. I used mostly acrylic paints, but one side of the bag (yellow, red, blue) is fabric paint.

I wonder if watercolours would work. I was thinking of splashing colours on blank cards to give a pretty background for home made greetings cards.

I would think they would. They might not be as vibrant, but they should work well as background. You should have a try.

I love the way you've used the splattering as tree foliage. It looks like it's in bloom! At first it reminded me of the starts and outer space, but once the tree ent it, it reminded me more of coloured cherry blossom! Well done!

Sounds like full-bodied art! I do like the splatter pattern on the bag.

It was. It's not often you get the chance to really wave your arm around when painting! The bag turned out surprisingly well.
