Pirate Day

The much anticipated Pirate Day at Brownies happened last week. Two girls came as pirates (although the big sister of one when collecting her did say "Why are you wearing your Hallowe'en costume?") and one came as a shark. We hadn't anticipated anyone being dressed up.
We were working under a slight disadvantage, in that Sparkly Owl's husband had had an accident, which left two of us to run the activities rather than three, which meant it wasn't quite as smooth as it could have been.
The object of the night was to complete four challenges as the crew of a pirate ship (we renamed the Sixes as Ships for the evening). For each completed challenge they would receive a piece of the treasure map.

They had to fire cannon balls at the enemy - or throw bean bags into targets. They had all to make a pirate hat out of newspaper. There was a simple colouring activity - colour a pirate and then use your fingers to make him dance a jig (it was just as well it was a simple activity), with additional ships to colour. And there was a quiz to complete. They had to work together as a crew, so everyone took part.

And finally they had to stick the map together and work out where the treasure was based on the following rhyme:
Avast, me hearties, the treasure will be found
Where two paths cross, upon the ground
So from Quizzing Cove to Parrot Plantation
You need to find the correct situation
And from Cutlass Creek to Headless Heights
If you succeed, the treasure is yours by rights
And with a bit (or a lot) of encouragement they all got there. The treasure - a plastic mug each. It was hard work, but they seemed to enjoy it - there was certainly a fair amount of enthusiasm. And when we were waiting for the last Brownie to be collected she turned to me and said, "That was fun!"
