Florence (Fiesole and Farewell)
Nov. 7th, 2016 06:47 pmOn our last day we felt we'd had enough of the crowds, so we took a bus to the local town of Fiesole. The town was a Roman settlement and also home to the Lombards, something I only learnt through their museum (finally, a museum telling people about the history).
They've uncovered the site of a Roman temple, baths and ampitheatre:

The main piazza has a statue commemorating Garibaldi meeting King Victor Emmanuel:

And it's possible to make out the Duomo in the distance:

We ate a lot of delicious pasta whilst we were there. On the last evening we were wandering around Florence looking for somewhere to eat, when we came across the theatre, which served food, but as a buffet:

On our last morning I got up early and went to the 7.30 Mass in the Duomo. There were less than 20 of us present and for me it was the perfect way to experience the beauty of the inside of the Duomo, both stained glass windows and painted cupola, as they were supposed to be seen.
