Last night the daughter and I went to see Jekyll & Hyde, performed by The Cotswold Savoyards.  It was SM's first time on stage, singing and acting both in the chorus - as part of The Poor - and having a short solo, dressed as a priest.  He enjoyed the whole run of performances and sang extremely well when we heard him.  (That he can sing well was no surprise to me).  So, yay, for him doing something new.

With regards to the musical, as my daughter said "there's a lot of singing".  There were times towards the end when I thought 'stop singing, just get on with it'.  And some of the songs are formulaic.  It's not a genre either of us would particularly choose.  I realise I saw both My Fair Lady and Top Hat earlier this year, but in both cases it wasn't just the singing it was the scale of the production that I enjoyed.

None of which should detract from this production, which was very good.  The performances in the second half of the week were a sell-out, and when my son and his wife were unable to come we were able to resell their tickets, and it had very good reviews.  It was an amateur production at a very high standard.

The performed who played Dr Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde was very good and was extremely convincing in the two separate personas.  I was talking to him at the after show party and said how much I'd liked his first appearance as Hyde and the way he showed the character relishing his freedom and he said that he enjoyed playing Hyde more than the restricted Jekyll.  The performers playing Emma and Lucy was also good singers, although I found Lucy to be the better - an opinion apparently shared by others.

So it's now all over.  I shall be interested to see where SM goes next, whether he decides to stay for their next performance, which is The Mikado, or whether he looks elsewhere.  He's got a term of acting classes booked for the spring which will give him greater abilities and confidence.  I have to admit tha,t as I watched the performance last nigh,t I realised that, whatever I might have vaguely wondered in the past, there is no way I would want to be out there, doing the same thing for a whole week to entertain other people.  I shall stick to writing for my creative output.

And now, all I need to do is get rid of the earworm of my husband's solo.
