The last of the characters in Sir Matthew Bourne's production of The Midnight Bell is Frank. He's introduced as the new customer and part way through the audience learns that he's a policeman. He therefore has even more reason to keep hidden that he's gay than most. However, he and Albert do manage to meet.
Frank opened the door and stepped into the pub, glad that there was no-one around who recognised him. He went to the bar, ordered a pint, nodded to the barman, who nodded back in a friendly fashion and then walked over to the table where Albert was sitting. They greeted each other, and Frank stretched his legs out under the table. It wasn’t long before he felt the pressure of Albert’s leg on his own and he pushed back in acknowledgement. They talked for a while and then got up and left together, two mates heading home the same way.
