Of all the characters, I think Watson is my favourite. Not the bumbling creation he is occasionally portrayed as, but a support for Holmes, not as brilliant as the detective, but, in my fanfics at least, possessed of a great deal of humanity. I am very pro-Mary and believe they were entirely happy before her death. After the hiatus I am happy to have Holmes/Watson and, on occasions, I like Holmes/Lestrade (who else could possibly have been the third and subsequent wives?). I also write quite a number of fics in first person POV, as ACD has Watson doing in the books.
Upon returning to our rooms following the visit to a patient, I spotted the note Holmes had left. He had decided to go by himself, despite my forcible comment the night before that it would not be safe. I picked up my medical bag, whether for excuse or of necessity, I didn’t yet know, and hurried back downstairs, calling to Mrs Hudson that I no longer wanted breakfast. A cab conveyed me rapidly to the docks. There I immediately spotted my likely destination, for it was consumed by a huge conflagration. I had been correct; my services would be needed.
