Many of you will know how much I like Sam Troughton, so can imagine how pleased I was to see he was going to be in a play at the National Theatre.  After the disappointment of La Musica which I saw two years ago, I wasn't entirely hopeful, since this was another two-hander, again without interval.  But it had good reviews and was a sell out production, so it seemed as though it should be better.

Sadly, and even though the play is transferrring to the Ambassodors Theatre in the new year, I didn't enjoy it.  Having read the reviews and seen the comments, it is clear I was not the target audience.  The premise concerns how difficult it is for people in their late thirties/early forties to meet up with others to have a relationship.  And how it's even harder in the age of the internet.

I may be treading on some toes here, for which I apologise, but I'm not convinced by the argument.  The setting is London, with the unspoken assumption that London is the only place to be.  Had this been set in a village, the audience would be mentally telling the characters to move out.

As for the two characters looking for a relationship.  I didn't like either of them.  Am I surprised that they hadn't found anyone?  Not really.  Both seemed to be in it for what they could get, but no thought was shown for what they could give.  Maybe they are damaged, and need to protect themselves, I can understand that.  But maybe they should try to manage their expectations.

I imagine there are those who would disagree with my assessment - please feel free to share your thoughts.

But because I dislike being completely negative, I shall add the daughter and I had a good shopping trip.  She found a dress for a charity ball she's going to, in Debenhams sale.  She helped me find a suitable top for my granddaughter's christening - also in Debenhams sale.  And I bought a hat and mittens for my granddaughter.
