Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial

On our journey home from Cambridge last week we called in at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, which is the only WWII American military cemetery in the UK.  It was the day after Memorial Day in the States and there had been a big memorial ceremony there.

There are nearly 4,000 graves here.  SM was clearly jolted seeing the number.  If I was slightly less affected, that was only a reflection of how much worse were the WWI memorials I'd visited just over a month earlier.



Like the other memorials I've visited it was very peaceful.

I didn't even know we had a memorial in other countries!

It really boggles the mind, when you have numbers laid out like that - names on a wall, crosses in a field, etc. So much senseless death.

According to the leaflet we had there are 26 cemeteries and 27 memorials around the world.

Like the other cemeteries/memorials I've visited, they're very simple and yet very poignant.
