Present Laughter: The Centre of Attention #067 voyage

Garry Essendine was going on a voyage.  He was taking a ship to Africa, and he really didn’t want to go.  He hadn’t wanted to go before, but now he knew he wouldn’t be travelling alone it was even worse.  He wondered if he could spend all his time in his cabin, but that would grow tiresome.  He could come out for meals, and to relax on deck for a time.  But then people would pursue him, and really people were so tiresome.  Why did he have to be the centre of attention, at times when it didn’t suit him?

Rutherford & Son: Mary Rutherford #031 courage

John Rutherford stormed out of the room, his family had all run away not one of them having the courage to stay.  But this slip of a woman, his daughter-in-law, had stood up to him.  Yes, she was offering him what he wanted, his grandson, but the terms were all of her dictating.  Rutherford slammed the door and headed back to the glass works; at least now he had something worth working for.

Mary Rutherford shook.  She had achieved what she needed.  Her son would be safe and provided for.  This was why she had refused to accompany her husband.

Farmyard Tales: After the Storm #066 storm

There had been a big storm in the night.  Poppy and Sam had heard the wind blowing and the rain falling, but they had been safe inside the farmhouse.  Now they had come outside to see what damage had been caused.  One of the trees had blown down, and Woolly the sheep had climbed up into the branches.  She looked very pleased with herself, but Mrs Boot was cross and told her to come down again at once.  The tractor shed had flooded and Duck was very happy, but Ted said some words which can’t be included in this story.

Torchwood: Chameleon Bug #077 bug

“It’s hard to imagine one small bug causing so much hassle,” Tosh said.

“I don’t think it meant to,” Ianto replied.  “I think its efforts to blend in simply drew too much of our electric supply.”

“It was rather alarming the way it furiously kept changing colour.”

Ianto peered through the spy hole in the cardboard box.  The bug had turned brownish, matching its surrounds, and now looked entirely peaceful.

“What will happen when we feed it?” Tosh asked

“We’re giving it a variety of green fruit and vegetables, so it shouldn’t take much current for it to turn green.”

Blues in the Night: Singing the Blues #014 blue

The girl sang the blues because the man she loved, the man she thought she could rely on, had let her down.  Would she become like the woman, forever thinking that someone would turn up and, as she waited, exchanging her possessions for the oblivion of drugs?  She hoped not.  Would she attain the acceptance of the lady, with her scrapbook of memories?  Not if she could find her man first.  And in the meantime, she would join them in singing the blues.  Sisters together, they were united against the world and whatever it might choose to throw at them.

The Night of the Iguana (Tennessee Williams): Behaviour #063 theory

“I believe, Mr Shannon,” Hannah Jelkes said, “your behaviour is simply a cry for help.”

“And why is this?” Shannon replied.

“You are not contained in your misery, you want everyone to see it, in the hope someone can help you.”

“And what about you, trailing behind Grandpa, all quiet and uncomplaining.  Does that make you content in your misery?”

Hannah gave a secretive smile.  “Perhaps.”

“It’s a theory, I suppose, but not one I subscribe to.”

“That is neither here nor there.  But despite your protestations, yours is not the sort of behaviour which people are allowed to ignore.”

Bitter Wheat (David Mamet): Unwanted Consequences #086 way

Barney Fein fumed.  This was not the way his life was supposed to go.  He shouted down the phone to his lawyer, “You need to get this sorted.”

“I’m doing what I can.”

“I need you here, now.”

“I have other clients who also need my services.”

“Ditch them!  I need you.”

“I can’t do that.”

“Why not?   I’ll break you.  I’ll …”

“You’ll what?  I don’t think anyone is going to pay much attention to the words of a totally discredited man.”

“I have a hold over you.”

“Don’t be too sure of that.”

Fein could almost see the smirk.

Romeo & Juliet (Matthew Bourne): Belonging #039 belong

Romeo shuddered at his first impressions of the Verona Institute.  He didn’t belong here; this was for disturbed youth.  And yet he didn’t belong with his family either.

Conform, conform, conform, was all he heard in the coming days.  Do this, drink this, do as all the others.  And then you’ll belong.  But not for them.

And then he found Juliet and finally there was someone he belonged with.  His family tried to take him home, tear him away from Juliet, as death had torn Mercutio from Balthasar, but he wouldn’t let them.  He belonged to Juliet and no-one else.

Atomic Blonde: What to Wear #028 wear

She had dressed carefully, her close-fitting dress leaving little to the imagination.  During dinner she had sensed the eyes of her contact dropping to her cleavage.  She could read his thoughts, that he planned having a little fun before taking the information she had promised him.

He suggested they go outside, and she slipped on her furry jacket, claiming she felt the cold.  Once away from the crowd, she took her stiletto from a jacket pocket and stabbed him before he could make a move.  Then she relieved him of his wallet, sliding it into another pocket.

As she walked back through the restaurant no-one spotted a thing.  Once more she had proved the importance of wearing the right outfit.

Hey Duggee: The Drawing Badge #084 drawing

Today the Squirrels are working for their drawing badge.

Betty and Happy are drawing cars, a red car followed by a police car.

Roly wanted to draw a tank, but Duggee’s encouraged him to draw pretty flowers instead.  Roly has drawn a flower with the petals pulled off.

Tag is drawing a bush and the happy birds sitting in the bush.

Norrie is drawing what was happening behind the bush.  There seem to be a lot of arms and legs involved.

Soon it is time to go home, and everyone has earned their drawing badge.  See you next time, Duggee!

There's something lovely about the TW team figuring out low-tech solutions to high-tech problems. Alien bug zapping all your power supply -- give it a little home in a cardboard box!

I am unfamiliar with the source works (well Romeo & Juliet I know, but not the adaption!), yet the Rutherford&Son drabble struck me most.

The strength of character in Mary was poignant as was why she fought: the security of her son.
