Lino Printing

This month's Dare to Dabble session was lino printing - a simple, if slightly messy craft.

We were all given two pieces of lino, plus tools for cutting and pens to draw the initial pattern:



My first attempt was a small tree - you can see some of my sketch lines.  The carving wasn't as easy as I expected, but I soon got the hang of it.



This was then inked (the messy part) and the inked tile placed on paper/card and rolled over to produce:



I moved onto the larger tile - I forgot to take a photo before it was inked



And I made a Christmas card - the one on the right is called 'snowstorm'



Then, with some time left, I tried a different design



To make some gift tags



They finished drying overnight and here are my final results, which I'm rather pleased with.  It's not a craft I'd take up independently, but I would definitely do it again.

I remember doing this in art classes at school! I did a falcon design, and we printed in one colour, then did some more carving on the lino and printed in a different colour over the first one. 45 years on, I still have all the prints and the lino block somewhere.

Yours look wonderful, very Christmassy, and will make lovely cards and labels!

We had the option of doing two colours but I decided to keep it simple. I'm impressed you still have yours.

Your post brings up happy memories of a lino print project that I did in junior high. I haven't tried it again since, but it was a lot of fun. Your own designs turned out beautifully. I especially like the green Christmas tree and holly prints.

Sometimes simple is better.

So am I, lol! I loved doing the lino printing in school. I think I still have most of my art projects. All my clay things, except the guitar which shattered in the kiln, and the hessian bag that I printed with my own design. Never put handles on it though.

Sadly, the horse my friend and I made for the Polyfilla Arts competition, which went off on exhibition, never came home. I often wonder what happened to it.

Like badly_knitted I remember doing a project in school with lino in two colours - unlike badly_knitted I'm pretty sure mine didn't last the intervening years. I'd like to give it another try though.

I love the Christmassy effect of yours - they work well in just the one colour for what you've done.

Thank you. It's something I'd not done before and I was surprised how easy and enjoyable it was at a basic level. I hope you do get another go at some point. I was very pleased with how they turned out.
