George Harvey Bone is the first of the characters in Bourne's version of the Midnight Bell, who didn't visit the pub. Although he would certainly not have been out of place there, being a border-line alcoholic frequenting the pubs of Earl's Court in 1939, during the months leading up to WWII. His story can be found in Hangover Square.
George Harvey Bone entered the Midnight Bell with the sole purpose of getting drunk. He bought a drink and heading morosely over to a table. Maybe Netta would come and join him, although no doubt that bore Peter would come too. It was so unfair, he and Netta would make an ideal couple, if only she would take him seriously. He staggered over to the bar to get another drink. While he was there, the pub door opened and Netta came in, calling out, “Buy us both a drink, darling, while you’re there.” That was the end of his cash.
