Super late start to Lonely Prompts week. In about 10 hours or so, I'll have the post for Day 2.

---

September 22-26 is Lonely Prompts Week and it will be a challenge week!

In the past, we used to have a "winner" who completed the most fills every day, and at the end of the week, we'd announce an overall winner. But this time around, we're doing things differently! There are no winners or “losers”, just prompts that have been filled. At the end of the week, we'll be sharing a round-up post of all the lonely prompts that have been filled.

Monday’s Theme: LGBT Day

More Information: Every fill has to be focused on a lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans character or pairing. Also note, character and/or pairing does not have to be canon within the fandom.

Also, to make up for this entry being a day late, I apologize that for as life got busy over the weekend and all day Monday, the prompt for Tuesday will be posted in 5 hours.

If you leave a request, please make sure it follows the theme for the day, however, you are more than welcome to fill any lonely prompt and share the fill here. Just let me know so that I can include the totals in a separate list.

Please number your fills when leaving more than one in a comment. This helps me when I'm ready to count them up.

To find those elusive Lonely Prompts, you can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

To get things going, a few rules that I ask you all to follow.

1. You can only request five prompts to be filled.
2. You can request no more than three prompts from the same fandom.
3. You can, however, fill as many prompts as you'd like!
4. In the subject line, be sure to say whether this is a request or a fill!
5. You must link back to whatever the prompt is in the community logs (whether filling or requesting it be filled), and, if you're filling the prompt, please complete the fill as a response to the original prompt.
6. If you are filling an "any/any" prompt, please let us know what fandom (or, if original, say so!) you're using for the response.
7. If you filled any lonely prompts earlier this week, this is the place to share them!
8. Finally, we now have a community at AO3. If you have an AO3 account, please post your fills there. More information on how to do this is located at this link.

Winter 2025 Signups Are Open!

The sign-ups are now open!

Treats Policy: As of February 2022, AO3 has introduced a setting to let users opt out of receiving additional gifts outside of formal exchanges (in Holmestice terms, "treats"). Please indicate whether you are or are not open to receiving additional fan works based on your sign-up. Also be sure to check your AO3 account preferences, under "Collections, Challenges and Gifts". AO3 accounts made before February 2022 default to ALLOW gifts, whereas new accounts default not to. Because signups are not handled through AO3, you MUST turn on treat ability if you want your gift posted to AO3. More information regarding this setting is available on AO3.

If you have a Dreamwidth account, join the Dreamwidth community and create a new post using the template below with your offer and request. The template is designed to be used with the HTML editor (not the Rich Text editor).

If you do not want a Dreamwidth account, you can leave your sign-up as a comment on this post using the "Anonymous" option. If you choose to use the Anonymous option, please make sure you correctly fill in all the identifying info in the template, so we know who signed up and how to contact you.

The sign-up template below includes ratings for what you're willing to create and would like to receive. Sexual content is deliberately separated from violence and other mature themes, so if you are someone who enjoys PWP but not violence, you have an easy way of indicating that (or vice versa) for the mods and other Holmestice participants.

The template also includes a list of suggested Holmesian fandoms and iterations. This is not an exhaustive list -- if you have another fandom in mind, please include it in your sign up! Alternatively, if you're open to offering or receiving any Holmesian fandom, please feel free to say so. (Although do make clear what you mean by "any" -- very few people truly can offer every pastiche, film, television, radio, and graphic novel adaptation ever made!)

Please note when putting down relationships:
  • "/" (e.g., "Holmes/Watson") indicates a romantic or sexual relationship
  • "&" (e.g., "Holmes & Watson") indicates a friendship or other platonic/fraternal/non-sexual/non-romantic relationship

Do please make sure you're using / and & correctly in your sign-ups, as we use it to determine matches, and your match will use it to determine what sort of relationships to write for you.

Matches will be made on fandom, characters/pairings, categories, and ratings. All other details you include (besides any "do not wants") are optional; i.e., your gift-maker may take inspiration from any specific prompt you include, but they are not required to use them.

By popular request original music has been added to gift type! You can offer or request this along with fic, art, podfic, graphics, vids, etc.

Sign-up Template )

You can edit your post until sign-ups close on October 14. Anything you add or delete after that will not be taken into account.

All stories must be a minimum of 1,000 words in length; icon posts must contain at least 10 icons; vids must be at least one minute in length. Any type of fanwork is required to go through some kind of beta process. All finished fanworks must be posted to AO3 and/or sent to the mods at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com on or before November 24. Directions on how to post/submit your work will be posted to the community later in the round. If you don't submit your work by the due date and have not contacted us for an extension, we will automatically look for a pinch hitter.

If you need your recipient to clarify their prompt or if you want to ask whether they're all right with that one particular thing you'd like to include, please contact us at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com, and we'll forward the question for you to preserve your anonymity.

Please remember that if you sign up to receive a gift, it'll only be fair if you create one as well. That said, if you have to drop out of the exchange for any reason, please contact one of the moderators as soon as possible by e-mailing us at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com so we can find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your intended recipient.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out!

New for this round: AI-generated pieces are not welcome in this exchange.

At the bottom of the sea

Yesterday I started watching season 2 of Wednesday with the first ep. It’s obviously a lot of setup, with Wednesday’s first day back at Never ore, dealing with hero worship and, of course, being annoyed by it. There’s also two mysteries already: an investigator that got pecked to death by ravens and Wednesday has a stalker. Are they connected? I guess we’ll see.

Xavier has been put on a bus which is a shame but at least had an in universe explanation that makes sense. Pugley is also joining Nevermore this year and already he has what might be a sub plot of his own. I already don’t like or trust the new head and it feels I’m right not too. Also it looks like Morticia is gonna have a bigger roll to play this year (which explains the Lego set!). It remains to be seen if that’s good or not. (Personally I wasn’t sold on Catherine Zeta Jones as her in season 1.)

Then there was dnd which went well, though I had to be muted at the start cause Leia was jumping everywhere and I was worried she’d knock things over. But it was also a mix of sad, sweet and ominous.

I started Borderlands 4 and did the opening quest though ran into trouble cause of a glitch. Thankfully exiting and restarting solved it though I am so pissed how it ended. (Why'd the hot guy have to die😭)

Then last night there was a nature documentary. I love nature stuff, even though Naryu tends to bark at the animals and get worked up, but I especially love stuff to do with the sea. This one was about a deep sea expedition to find coelacanth.

Now the coelacanth is famously known as a living fossil. It was around when the dinosaurs were and was believed extinct long ago… until one was found fished up. (Though if I remember right indigenous people already were aware of them.) Ones have been found fished up and washed ashore since but until now they weren’t seen. Luckily the expedition was successful! It found one hiding between rocks and they watched her for 30+ hours to see what she’d do.

And she spent that time just staying in the same spot, which is relatable. Eventually she went for a swim and joined a bunch of other coelacanth just chilling out in a lil cave. It was honestly so incredible to see them and you can even tell them apart by their markings. There really is something so strangely endearing about them too.

In the night I watched Alien Earth. I’m an ep behind so this one was The Fly. There was A Lot of poor communication going on throughout the whole thing (as well as bad decisions!), though I can’t help but wonder if at least some was intentional. Also Boy Kavalier shown off his feet again(If the alien universe has a wiki feet his must go crazy) and he proved that, while he appears dismissive he isn’t an idiot. (Though it does seem his head of security might be undermining him as well as Yutani plotting)

Today’s been an ok day, though tiring cause of taking Naryu for a longer walk. But! There’s finally a trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu! There’s also a description, but it’s so vague it could mean anything. It’s so cool seeing a u-wing and lil Grogu being cute and Sigourney Weaver.

There’s also more MCR dates been announced, though there’s not one in Birmingham (there’s more for London, plus Liverpool and Glasgow). I’m kinda glad for that though, it’ll be a feeding frenzy and I’m not prepared for that at all. But good luck if you’re gonna try!

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question (courtesy of [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith): For those of us who do yarn crafts, what kinds of yarn do you prefer working with and why?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Home again. I've been away for a few days visiting family in another state. The internet is available, but I haven't been on it much. So *waves to my DW peeps*

Sept is always busy. Much adulting has ensued all month. Stuff like car inspections and flu shots. Nothing glamorous - trust me on that. Now hopefully I can get back to that [community profile] trope_of_the_month fic I've been messing with.

Despair Sucks. Perhaps a Palate Cleanser's in Order

Even though the world is on fire and every morning brings pit-of-the-stomach dread about what the morning headlines will tell, it isn't giving up the fight to say "today I'm going to tell despair to suck it."

I realized this morning that my last couple of posts have been full of rage and frustration. Those are true emotions, but they're also corrosive in the long run - and who the hell knows how much time "the long run" comprises. So here are a couple of things I can honestly say made me smile, or things that I did that I think were fun, or good for someone.

I can't recall if I've mentioned my friend Sandy's efforts to get her and her husband, Dr. Bob, back into the house they had to leave last December because of fire. Their situation has been fraught on so many levels, and Bob and I haven't been able to help much, other than to have them over for supper and an evening away from their long-term BnB just to have time away from the whole thing. But now that they're starting the process of getting back home, we've been able to help.

They have had 1100 badly packed and mislabeled boxes of goods delivered back to their house (that's part of why their situation has been so fraught, even now) and they were overwhelmed with the prospect of unboxing everything and putting things back to rights. Bob and I have spent a few hours every day or so helping them do that; from helping them sort things into "keep," "give away," and "pitch" bags, to simple things like breaking down boxes. Boxes and boxes and boxes - and breaking down those boxes and packing garbage bag after garbage bag with the paper used to pack the boxes - becomes really important in this situation. Sometimes all Sandy needed was someone to listen as we took a coffee break, so that she wasn't simply screaming into the void.

As of today, when I walked in to help Dr. Bob and their friend Steve with more unboxing, the place is starting to look a fair bit more than simply piles of boxes. I think even Dr. Bob, who is inclined to be a glass half empty type, was feeling a little bit of hope.

They have a long way to go before the place is completely back to rights, but at least they know we won't abandon them. Their longtime friend and retired housekeeper is coming up from Birmingham to do some of the heavy emotional and unpacking lifting that's still necessary. I think they'll finally be able to call their home an actual home before the end of the year.

Earlier this week, we had the unexpected pleasure of a visit from
[personal profile] ljgeoff , who was on her way from one travel nursing assignment to another. It's been a few years since Lisa last visited us; we shared some pizza, chocolate chip cookies, and conversation, and then she was on her way. She has more energy in her little finger than I have in my entire body. She also is braver than I think I'll ever be. It was a joy to be in the same room with her again.

And finally, we've decided to give away the Keurig coffee/tea/whatever maker that a friend gave us. We are drinking enough coffee these days that we haven't used the Keurig in months. Mind you, given the increasing price of coffee, perhaps keeping the Keurig and getting rid of the regular coffee maker might be the smarter choice. Sigh.

Yuletide Gift Exchange 2025

Sep. 21st, 2025 06:45 pm
greerwatson: (Default)

Once again, it's that time of year. The annual Yuletide gift exchange opened nominations last week. (See the post.) So I'm aiming this at Forever Knight fans. Yes, I know that I said last year that Forever Knight wouldn't be eligible in 2025; but there haven't been as many new stories posted as I expected. (Or maybe it's more that there weren't as many old stories cross-posted.) Anyway, at this moment, FK has 958 works in AO3 that are complete, in English, and over 1K words in length.

If there are other FK fans thinking of doing Yuletide this year, we should coordinate. When one is actually signing up for Yuletide, one is only permitted to request/offer characters in the tagset; so it's important to get in the ones you want to ask for.

This year, they've upped the number of fandoms one is permitted to request to five. Still only four characters per fandom. Obviously, FK has far more than that! However, by coordinating with one another, we can ensure that we each nominate different ones, thus getting a larger tagset. If we don't coordinate, there's a high probability of duplication.

Nominations are open until 26 September 9pm UTC. Note that local time for you will vary depending on your time zone.

To repeat: if you plan to request/offer Forever Knight for Yuletide, we should coordinate in order to get as many different characters as possible into the tag set.
