Christmas Eve
“Why did you drag me in here when we could have been at home in front of the fire?” Gene complained to Sam as they sat at the back of a cold church.
“I remembered my mum taking me to a crib service when I was about four and I just wanted to relive that moment.”
Gene was about to make a caustic remark when a glance at his DI’s face and his obvious happiness at recalling the memory stopped him in his tracks.
And as he joined in with singing the carols the DCI even permitted himself a smile.
Carol Singing
"Once in Royal David’s City"
More like the centre of Manchester
"Stood a lowly cattle shed"
Department store festooned with decorations
"Where a mother laid her baby"
Mothers, fathers, kids, grandparents
"In a manger for a bed"
Carrier bags, shopping trolleys, armfuls of parcels
And someone who’s using the crowds to evade the police. Gene and Sam home in on their suspect. “Going somewhere Malloy? We’d like to have a word with you at the station”
"While shepherds watched their flocks by night"
The boys from CID
"All seated on the ground"
Were to be found in The Railway Arms
