The Hobbit BOFA (here be spoilers)
Dec. 17th, 2014 09:45 pmSunday saw me heading to London to see the final part of The Hobbit trilogy. I met up with the same group of friends (more or less) who I had seen the previous two parts with and we went to the same cinema. I am very grateful to
trillsabells for encouraging me to join them for the first part, it's been a truly memorable journey.
I enjoyed the film. I know it's had a mixed reaction and I saw a number of interviews - and I've read the book - so it was never going to be a total surprise. In fact I enjoyed it more than I expected. Despite its title being Battle of the Five Armies it felt as if there was less fighting - either that or the fighting made sense - in the previous films I've got very bored by the end with all the fights and forgotten who the opponents were.
Billy Connolly as Thorin's cousin is brilliant and hilarious. And he rides a war boar. Meanwhile Thranduil rides an elk, whose antlers prove to have their uses, although must be a bit tricky negotiating narrow gateways. And then Thorin, Fili and Kili ride out on war goats - which apparently appear from nowhere, although they are rather splendid beasts.
I liked the way Thorin was shown slowly succumbing to dragon sickness, and how he overcame it. His fight to the death with Azog was good and his last words with Bilbo were moving. I'm looking forward to having the DVD and being able to watch these scenes again. The scene that really affected me was when the other dwarves pay their silent respects to their dead.
It wasn't an epic film, but it was enjoyable and I was very glad to have seen it. Inevitably most viewers left as the credits started rolling, which was a shame, not only is "The Last Goodbye" a good song, but the graphics on the credits were beautiful.
