Last week at Brownies the girls all worked on their Pets at Home booklets.  Everyone who finished the booklet to our satisfaction was awarded their badge.  To our satisfaction means different things for different girls - if you are 7 and can only just read and write we accept one level, if you are 9 and very competent we expect rather more.  All of which ties in with the idea of "doing our best" as the Brownie Promise says.  Those who didn't finish were encouraged to take the booklet home and finish with parental help - apart from one girl who had my help at the end of the evening to get finished, because with three younger siblings there is limited support available at home.  The three who weren't present last week were given their booklets and promised their badges if, once again, they completed them at home.  As you can imagine, we are keen to emphasise that there is a certain amount of work required in order to earn a badge.

This week we told the Brownies about well dressing, in which pictures are made with flower petals pressed onto clay.  We then undertook our own version of well dressing, but using coloured tissue paper ripped into small pieces and a piece of A4 paper.  They were told to choose any animal they liked for their picture.  It was a very popular activity, with everyone applying themselves, although as usual some of the finished items were better than others.  It was one of the rare evenings when they all got on with the craft, without needing extra assistance, and seemed happy to do so.  Some of them ended up rather sticky by the end, but then that was only to be expected; hold up a glue stick on one side of the room and some of those on the far side will be instantly sticky.

Next week we have games and an enrolment, and I need to come up with some more structured games than just running round.  We shall be having an "active quiz", in which the leaders ask questions with multiple choice answers and the Brownies run to the corner they think is the correct answer.  This is ideal as it combines learning with physical activity.  I just need to write the quiz.  And then I've volunteered to run a pirate evening next month, so need to dig out the treasure map again.
