Sherlock

I've read a number of reviews/blog posts about the first two episodes of series 3 and made some comments but thought it was time for me to make a post of my own.

Episode One left me completely cold.  For me it had too much fan service; there were too many possibilities for how Sherlock didn't die, the one they eventually settled on had too many holes in it and by that point I wasn't even sure that this was the final solution; the character they gave Sherlock was of the sort that would cause me to switch off a programme and I didn't like the way they showed John.  And running gags should be left to Morecambe and Wise, they were much better at them.  By the end of the episode I felt totally divorced from Sherlock fandom, because I just didn't care.

Fortunately I enjoyed episode two.  It started badly - I adore Lestrade, don't get me wrong - and I feared I was going to dislike it as much as I had the previous episode.  But it improved; I liked the plot.  I'm sure there were problems with it but it appealed to my imagination.  So by the end I was happy.  I'm a John/Lestrade shipper, but I'm not unhappy about what happened - I am confident I can find a way round it in which no-one gets hurt (at least emotionally - whumpage is another matter).

And so to episode three.  I know there are spoilers around, which I'm trying to avoid.  My fear is that, in view of the Gatiss tweet *possible spoiler*

sometimes somebody has to die, that the death will be used as an easy way to get round something.  At which point I shall retreat to my own hobbit hole, where, as when we looked at Charles Augustus Milverton in [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 Lestrade and Watson have retired together and are discussing the case.
