Star Trek Into Darkness
Jan. 11th, 2014 11:39 amI finally watched the DVD this week (it was cheap on Amazon) and I didn't think it was that bad. Although I knew nearly all of the plot. Normally I aim to avoid spoilers (which includes not reading reviews of Shakespeare plays I'm going to, even though for some of them, like Hamlet and King Lear, I know the plot well. It can however mean that I miss out on aspects the director wanted to get across, as in James McAvoy's Macbeth, but then maybe that's a failure of the director) but knowing that it would be several months before I watched the film I didn't bother.
I agreed with the main criticisms - I much preferred the ending of TOS: The Wrath of Khan, with Spock making the logical decision and going ahead, despite knowing the personal cost, rather than Kirk rushing off, without much thought, which was the theme of the whole film. By the time Spock was chasing/fighting Khan at the end I'd had enough - one chase/fight sequence too many. And how Benedict Cumberbatch can portray anyone with a family name of Singh I don't know. Having said all that I'm happy to have seen it, and will pass the DVD on to my son.
SM decided to watch this yesterday (I'd watched when he was out) and managed about two minutes before giving up. We rewatched Gosford Park instead. Interesting plot and great actors: Michael Gambon, Charles Dance, Maggie Smith, Richard E Grant, Eileen Atkins etc etc; there's even a young Laurence Fox in a small part. If you haven't seen it, I would recommend it.
Icon because it's the only one I have of Karl Urban. Must get some more.
