Yes, back at Brownies last week.  We have about 20 girls - numbers are a little fluid, what with seasonal colds, plus a school event this week that took three of our older girls, but a reasonable number - enough to play games and do things.  Three new girls, although one seems very reluctant to join in, or even come into the room we meet in, preferring to stand outside the door and watch.  I think we'll give her one more week before telling her mother it's not working.  We want to welcome all sorts, but don't have the capacity to watch a child who isn't in the room, especially if one of the leaders is unable to come one week.

Last week we began with a powwow followed by games.  Because we always play games the first week back.  It's a tradition.  Much as Pink Knickers is always the first game we play.

This week we had camp fire singing.  No camp fire - setting fire to the new hall would not have made us popular.  No singing either, because none of us can sing - but we made a noise and the Brownies joined in.  Lots of old favourites, including 'Alice the Camel' and 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'.  Or how the Owls make complete fools of themselves, so we might as well do so too.  The hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows was popular.

[livejournal.com profile] scfrankles asked me if my Brownies were aware of the contribution they made to my writing.  They aren't, but they've played their part: Not Always the Fastest (Jo Portman from Spooks) and Not What Brown Owl Expected (Sally Donovan from Sherlock) have characters remembering their time as Brownies, while There was One Thing that Scared Even Gene Hunt is a rather different experience.
