It's only just over a month since my last book review, clearly the latest books have been gripping.

Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz
One of my RL friends was reading this and encouraged me to do so too.  Set immediately after the events of the Reichenbach Falls with Holmes dead, and an American is trying to take over Moriarty's empire.  Two agents of the law, one British, one American, seek to stop him.  It's a good read, although a bit too graphically violent for me (I skipped some of the descriptions).  I wasn't all that satisfied with the ending, and had half guessed at it, but if you want a slightly different take on Victorian London and the crime scene it's worth a read.

Temeraire by Naomi Novik
The first in the "His Majesty's Dragon" series, as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] canonisrelative I wasn't sure at first whether it would appeal, but I really enjoyed it.  Capt Laurence is a great character and Temeraire, his dragon, is a delight.  I have a thing for people being competent, and those around Laurence are.  Of course, not everyone is on the side of right, but the way the main characters work together is a dream for me.  As soon as I finished the book, I'd ordered the next in the series.

Life after Life by Kate Atkinson
Winner of the 2013 Costa Novel Award and recommended by [livejournal.com profile] solosundance who said it was one of her favourite books of the last five years.  Ursula lives her life over and over again and the reader sees how in one life she dies and in another she escapes death, with the pattern repeating many times.  It's a very interesting book, and one where I frequently found myself thinking "just read a few pages more" when I knew I should be getting to sleep.  Definitely a book I'd recommend - the author captures Ursula's world very well.
