And we're off ...
Sep. 17th, 2015 09:25 pmYep, back at Brownies.
A new year, new term and yes, new girls. We had eight of them! Which brought us up to 19 on our first night, with a few who we were expecting back who hadn't come. Which is actually quite a lot to absorb all at once. As is traditional we played games on our first evening, including a new game I introduced which was designed to include everyone, even all the new girls.
Tonight was our second week back. We had lost one of the new girls, in this case not a surprise, we had the distinct impression she didn't want to be with us and possibly felt a lot of the activities were a bit beneath her. But one of our old Brownies was back - mum had completed forgotten last week, but she's still keen, which brings us back to 19. Theoretically we could take a few more, but it's a lot easier when there are sufficient girls who already know the routines and can help the new ones.
We are working for our World Cultures Badge. This year the World Scout Jamboree was in Japan, and a number of Guides would have gone. The UK Scouts produced an excellent activity pack based on their trip and I went through it finding sufficient activities we could adapt to fulfil the badge requirements. So this week we made dolls and set them out in the form of the Japanese Doll Festival. Each girl decorated her own doll as she wanted, so we didn't quite follow the standard rules for the festival, but when we laid them out in order they looked extremely effective.
One of the other badge clauses is to play a musical game or make a musical instrument. We decided playing a game would be quite sufficient. There was a Japanese version of "Port & Starboard" which our girls like, so we played that. It was not as easy as they thought, but good fun and again they enjoyed it.
So, a good start to the year. They all seem keen and positive and mostly willing to have a go. And I'm glad to have my wine when I get home.
