It's Half Term

As mentioned in my last Brownie post, we had an active quiz, which was designed to re-inforce the new Brownies knowledge about the organisations and remind our current girls as well. So we began with questions about the early years of Brownies, followed by questions based on the promise. At least they knew about the promise, even if their other knowledge was very limited. And then we played a version of the Colour Game, with the story being centred on an enrolment.
The enrolment itself went very well. Both new Brownies come from Forces families, so the enrolment had been delayed to allow for one dad to return from six months stationed abroad, whilst the other dad, who's posted elsewhere during the week had to get permission to come home for the day. Both girls knew the promise really well and made it very clearly. We had had doubts about one of the girls, but clearly she had been practising at home and did herself great credit.
The week I was away they made things with beads. With only two leaders we always choose an easy activity.
And for our final week we began working on the badge which celebrates 100 years of the Senior Section. This is for girls aged 14 to 25, and of course refers back to when Rangers (aged 14+) were founded. The Brownies had to work in their sixes to create a tower of plastic drink cups (the disposable kind) using an elastic band to which each girl attaches a piece of string. It was very interesting seeing which sixes were successful and which weren't. Then Brown Owl split the girls up into different groups giving those who had tried hard but had had no support from the rest of their six a chance. Seeing the pleasure of the girls who did succeed was worth the effort.
We shall be continuing with this badge, which has a number of different clauses in the autumn, since we have until the end of the year to complete it.
