Following our very successful trip to the library we have continued working on the Booklover badge.

Last week, under caring for books, each Brownie made a cover for a book.  We currently have a reasonable sum in our funds, so Brown Owl was able to go out and buy a selection of books, so each girl had a new book of her own to cover.  It should have been oh so easy.  Only Sparkly Owl was ill, and two of us with 17 Brownies, none of whom seem to have any ability whatsoever was a bit challenging.  Gradually order was restored and some of them got the idea, and then they helped some of the others.  Everyone went home with a book with a pretty cover.

This week we covered the rest of the badge clauses.  Obviously one of the requirements of booklover is to read books, so the first thing they did was list four books they had read, by title and author.  They then had to make bookmarks and spent a very happy half hour drawing and colouring their bookmarks.  While they were doing that I collected all the lists of books in and did a quick summary of the different authors.  Another section of the badge says the booklover should discuss other books with the tester and then find new books to read.  My idea was for some of the Brownies to speak briefly on authors they liked to give the rest of the pack some ideas.

I selected 10 authors: Jacqueline Wilson, J K Rowling and Roald Dahl being amongst the favourites, and allocated them amongst the older half of the pack.  Then taking each author in alphabetical order the Brownie came to the front and I asked them which books they'd read by that author, why they liked them, and why they thought others should read them.  We had some surprisingly thoughtful answers, especially from some of our oldest Brownies, including encouraging them in their love of fantasy, and showing what could happen if you were brave enough to try something.

The top three reasons for reading a book were: It was fun; it was exciting and you didn't know what would happen; there was a girl/girls who got on and did things.
