Cigar
I do not like the smell of cigars, so steer clear of them. However, they have their place in Sherlock Holmes (and similar) stories. Gifts of cigars, poisoned cigars, companionably smoking cigars are all acceptable. Even so, I prefer the use of a pipe.
Martini
Nothing wrong with the occasional cocktail. But 'vodka martini - shaken not stirred' instantly brings up an image of James Bond.
Roulette
Back to James Bond! I don't gamble (other than raffle tickets for causes I actually support) so would have no interest in playing roulette.
Putting all three together takes me to Casablanca:
Rick Blaine looked at the man sitting at the roulette table, a cigar in one hand and a martini in the other. He nodded to Sascha, who acknowledged the unspoken message. The man would lose heavily, spend what little he won at the bar, and then leave.
As he left, he would be followed by two of Renault’s men, who would accidentally bump into him. If he fought back two more of Renault’s men, this time in uniform, would come to his assistance. Between them they would relieve him of the stolen papers, and quietly return them to their rightful owner.
Everyone knew there were ways of getting things in Casablanca which weren’t entirely legal, but stealing from a widow at her husband’s funeral was not condoned. Particularly when this particular thief has used his quasi-legal position to do so. Rick and Renault had been in agreement and action had been taken.
