Last week we had an enrolment for the girls who had joined at the beginning of term.  And because of this we chose to have a quick craft, of a winter nature.

We made melting snowmen.  These are very easy to do (for those of you who like to engage in Brownie crafts).  One plain biscuit, one marshmallow offset at one side, cover everything with icing, add eyes, scarf and buttons.  The marshmallow acts as the head and the rest of the snowman has already melted.  This is ideal, because it doesn't matter if the icing is runny (we used fondant icing for ease, but any sort of icing will do) or if the Brownies aren't very good at accurately placing eyes and buttons.

After which we enrolled three new Brownies.  Brown Owl suggested I did the actual enrolment, which was good.  The girls varied from very confident to nervous, but with a bit of encouragement where needed, they all said their promise and the law.  If a Brownie dries up completely then we get the whole pack to say it, because no matter how good they've been at learning the words, saying it in public can be very nerve-wracking.

Then this week as our end of term treat we took the girls out to the local pub/restaurant.  I had made the booking a couple of months ago, and then sent the orders over last Friday, but had had no response.

[Brief personal aside - as some of you know, I had a car accident on Monday morning, I'm okay, but bruised, the car is a write-off.  It threw the week into chaos.]

I sent an email on Tuesday asking for acknowledgement, and finally phoned up Wednesday afternoon.  They had my original booking (phew!) but couldn't access the computer for the menu selections.  9.30 that night they phoned up to say they'd got them.

So yesterday we met in the Community Centre as usual, and then walked the Brownies over to the pub.  They had set up two long tables for us in a slightly separated area, which was perfect.  All the Brownies sat along one table while Sparkly Owl and I ate at the other one.  The food was good - at least ours was and the girls seemed happy eating their chicken burger/fish piece/cheese & tomato pizza.

Half way through the meal (between main course and dessert) I did my mother duck and ducklings act, walking the length of the restaurant with a little gaggle of Brownies following as they needed the toilets.  The mum who was eating elsewhere in the restaurant thought it hilarious, especially when I did my second trip.

They then had chocolate brownie/dunking donuts/ice cream sundae/jelly & ice cream and parents arrived to collect them.  The Brownies all enjoyed themselves, we weren't too disruptive for the rest of the diners (it was late afternoon, so it wasn't busy) and one of the waitresses said they were sweet.

And so we come to the end of another term.  We have one Brownie leaving to go onto Guides - she's been with us for three years, so it's sad to see her go.  And there are a number who may join us at the beginning of next term.

The melting snowmen are really clever, I must keep them in mind for my grandkids. Your end of term treat sounds lovely too, I can just see you walking your little troop of Brownies to the loo in proper mother duck fashion:) Glad you all had a good time.

I'm sorry to hear about the crash - I must have somehow missed it. Are you okay?

Love the melted snowmen ... so cute! And I'm glad that the end of term treat went down well.

The melted snowman is very cute! :)

The mother duck image makes me giggle and brings up memories of doing that with kids I had taught.

Absolutely, yes, but I don't see the marshmallow making it to the cookie. They will probably eat a deconstructed version.
It's been added to my list and I'll probably have the boys try it after the holidays. I've already decorated the cookies I've made and I want to get through the holiday season before engaging in a new messy project.
