It didn't rain the day we arrived, so we were able to wander around a bit in the afternoon and headed down to the Danube:

In the evening we went for a further wander, and found a very pleasant bar which served us a very pleasant bottle of wine.

The following day, however, it was raining.  We began our sightseeing with a visit to St Stephen's Basilica.  Unlike many of the cathedrals etc we have visited, the building was only finished in 1905, having taken over 50 years to construct.

and from there we walked onto see the Hungarian Parliament

After lunch we made our way to the Zeneakademia, which is the music academy founded by Franz Liszt and others.  It's beautiful inside and we were able to take a guided tour, but I was clearly too fascinated to take many photos.

After which we headed for the Franz Liszt Museum.  I knew nothing about Liszt, so it was interesting seeing the rooms he had lived in when he was in Budapest in the later part of his life.

After which we went back to the hotel for a rest, before going to an organ concert at the Basilica.  The music was nearly all very familiar, and apart from the organ there was a violinist, a trumpeter, and two singers.  It was lovely to sit and listen and appreciate the building.

It's always nice to be a church for a service or concert rather than just as a tourist.

50 years was quite fast, really. Think how long it took to build the mediaeval cathedrals, and how long the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is taking!

I adore Lizt (recommend the film Liztomania if you can get a copy anywhere). And I like going round composers' houses - Mozart and Chopin had fascinating homes turned into museums.

I'm enjoying the photographs ^___^ Particularly impressed by the second one of the Basilica.
