This month's Dare to Dabble was for material crafts and I opted to make Suffolk Puffs.

Which begin with a selection of pieces of material: 



Which are cut into circles of varying sizes by drawing round objects:



A running stitch is sewn all the way round the circle, pulling up the material as the stitches are made and a button is sewn on to hide the join:

   

This is repeated with the other circles of material:

   

And then the individual puffs are sewn together to make a Christmas tree:

I had not encountered the term "Suffolk Puff" before. Why is it named for Suffolk?

Also, it sounds to me like it should be the name of a pastry. 😁

Thank you. The idea is supposed to have begun in the county of Suffolk (but I don't know if that's really the case.) Yes, it should be a pastry - and definitely not to be confused with a Suffolk Punch (a shire horse).

Interesting! I think there could be many different effects depending on what kind of material you used.

Yes, some of the materials I used were quite fine, which made for easier stitching, but a thicker material would give more substance. And it would be easy to add extra layers.

My grandmother showed me how to make those when I was a little girl! She made them without a button and made two entire matching bed covers which were satin backed. I LOVE your colourful ones! They'd be so cute sewn onto things!!!

It's good to know others have made them in the past. I knew they could be used to make bed covers, they should make the covers quite warm. The button is to cover the central meeting point, which wouldn't be necessary if the article had a backing.

I hadn't heard of Suffolk Puffs before. I was a bit baffled until I saw the end result. What a great idea for a Christmas craft. Yours turned out really nicely. :-)
