This was prompted by this week's [community profile] thefridayfive because the first four questions were about the Oscars, which I have no interest in.  The last question was 'What is your favourite movie of all time?'

Without a doubt that has to be Casablanca.  I've watched it so many times, and even though I know how it ends I still feel a sense of tension as the ending approaches.  I don't know whether it appeals more because it's in black and white, but I wouldn't want it to be colorised.  I like the combination of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.  I think the plot is great.  It really just grabs me every time.

I've even written for it: a drabble as part of Multifandom Drabble exchange: An Evening with Miss Lund and Nothing Out of the Ordinary about life in Casablanca pre-Victor Lund.

The film even turns up in Snippets from Werewolf Life

It's one of my favourite films as well though I've seen it so many times I can play it in my head. :D

oh Casablanca is my all-time favorite movie and the one I've seen the most in theaters, bc almost every time they re-release it for an anniversary I go. I did miss the 80th, though. When I was living in DC during college they showed it in an independent theater for a few weeks and I think I went three times.

There's a book about the making of the movie, We'll Always Have Casablanca, that goes into detail about how many of the actors were in fact Nazi refugees, including those playing the Nazis, and how it all contributed to a very unique feel while filming. It's really a good read, I would recommend it. I also picked up The Casablanca Cookbook at Half-Price Books but I haven't looked through it in detail, it's a small book and I mostly got it because, well, Casablanca.

It is, imo, a perfect movie and I'm always delighted to hear someone else loves it the way I do.

It's a very good book, and it really makes you realize just how unique the movie was and its circumstances. I live in fear Hollywood ever decides to remake it, because you just can't remake that one. Some classic movies I could see being redone, that is not one of them.
