Back in July Penguin books began to publish a new series with their traditional green (crime) spines, but with new covers.  The covers are of fairly minimalist design, principally black and green, with some having a red highlight.  I think you might term them classy but understated.

There were initially ten books in the series, of which I bought two The Drowning Pool by Ross Macdonald, with Lew Archer as the detective, and Maigret and the Headless Corpse by Georges Simenon.  Apart from enjoying both stories, I liked the look of the books, so very happily pre-ordered some more when the next ten were announced and which arrived a couple of weeks ago.  (Game Without Rules by Michael Gilbert, Maigret's Revolver by Georges Simenon and Other Paths to Glory by Anthony Price)

Unlike the British Library Crime Classics, some of these are slightly later in time, although still classics in that they are not modern, and there's more of an espionage sense for a number of the books in the series.  Some are very well known, as with the John Le Carré books, others less so, like the Japanese author Edogowa Rampo.

The next nine books in the series are now available for pre-order and will be published next June.  I have placed a pre-order for two of them.

If you are in any way interested - and they might make good presents if not for your own reading - the full list is here.

I don't read paper books anymore, I don't see well enough for that. But a few of the covers are nice enough that if in a book store, I might actually have bought them just for the cover XD
