Fannish 50 (47) - Friends - Give Me A Year

As part of my final Fannish 50 batch celebrating Friends, I thought it would be interesting to share a bit about myself.  But I decided not to do the usual 'ask me anything' sort of question.  Instead, give me a year and I will try to tell you something about it that is relevant to me.  If it's a year I've actually lived through then it will hopefully be more personal (assuming I can remember!) and if not I'll see if I can find a connection of some kind, although the further back into history you go, the more general the answer may become.

I've no idea how this will work, or whether it will work at all, but I can but try!

In 1983 we had moved out of London and were living in Newbury. We had just bought our first house, a mid-terrace three-bedroomed house. One evening we were entertained to see two local policeman trying to catch a cow which had escaped from a nearby field and wandered down a narrow pathway. It took them some time to persuade the cow to turn round as it was narrower than a cow's length.

The perfect Sherlock Holmes year - and my favourite fandom in so many ways. This has to be the year the Ocelot and the rest of the Gang belong to.

I did several earlier in the year. The last few I shall spread out.

1975

I was at university in Nottingham. I was living in Derby Hall, at the time one of only three mixed sexed halls. I've just looked at their website and I'm surprised at home similar it all looks to when I was there, which surprises me, as I'd have expected it to have modernised rather more.

2005

That was the summer both kids, then teenagers, spent travelling. Son went to Argentina with a school party and Daughter went to Europe three times, once on a school battlefields trip, once on school French exchange, and once on a tour in part of Germany with her orchestra. I went to Wales.

Wow, Argentina? That's quite the school trip!

They were 17 and it was one of those trips where they did something in the community and got to see something of the country.

In 1985 we were living in a different house in a town called Chipping Sodbury north of Bristol and I was working in Bristol in the finance department of Courage's the brewers.

2010

The Daughter started at university to train as a paediatric nurse, which meant I was in a position to leave a job where I was increasingly unhappy and take a couple of months looking for a job which was more suitable with slightly less hours. At the same time we started looking to move house as we wanted to downsize.

That was the year we left London. We moved out of a top floor flat of a converted townhouse in Cheyne Place, not far from the Thames in Chelsea.

1988
It was a BAD year for our family, so it'd be nice to read something good about that year for a change!

It was the year the Son and our first child was born, so a lot of the year is baby focused. We also moved house and began our life in a Gloucestershire village where we'd be involved for many years. The Son is now back working there.

We were in Newbury that year. It was the year I caught chickenpox, which is not to be recommended as an adult. A friend's daughter went down with it and it must have been a particularly strong strain as she gave it to her father and also to me (because, of course, the infection is there before there's any indication of the illness). At least later on when our kids had it I wasn't at risk.

The year I moved from South Ham Infants School down the road to South Ham Junior School. Both closed in 1986. Also when I began wearing glasses. I wasn't at either school for more than a year and nothing much remains in my memory, apart from walking past them in later years.

1997

The Daughter was a Rainbow (youngest section of Girl Guides) who celebrated their 10th anniversary that year. At that point the uniform was a tabard in different colours of the rainbow, depending on the unit, and hers was purple.

She had joined at the beginning of the year and in typical style, had come home after her first week demanding her uniform, to be sponsored, and to go on an outing.
