smallhobbitRight SM (I got tired of referring to him as OH) and I are back from our break in Lisbon. Where a good time was had by all. The weather was sunny and hot (okay, a little too hot when walking, but still) the people were friendly, the food was cheap and we sat outside every evening and ate and drank. Which is really what a holiday should be all about as far as I am concerned. So yeah, a success.
We visited five of the ten top visitor sites, including all of the top four, and liked all of them. Just because somewhere is popular doesn't necessarily mean it's worth visiting, but we chose carefully, knowing our time was limited and enjoyed what we saw. We took our time at the various destinations rather than rushing round and trying to see everything which meant we were able to enjoy what was there. I suspect we didn't quite see everything at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, but there comes a point in any museum where, however beautiful the objects are, the mind cannot look at anything more. Strangely enough there were three alabaster religious statuettes from Nottingham (SM's home city) dating from the fourteenth century; we wondered where they were originally made for and what journey they had taken to arrive in Lisbon.
The food was excellent. Lisbon is famous for its fish which was great as far as I was concerned and I had a different type of fish every day. The pastries are splendid too. Nearly everyone spoke English, but for a lady in the cake shop, so I discovered that I knew enough Portuguese to buy cakes. I can also buy railway tickets in Portuguese. (In fact that's one thing I can do in five languages.)
Being away provided me with a great opportunity to write. I finished my Sherlock Spook Me fic on the plane to Lisbon, wrote a Lewis Hallowe'en drabble, finished another part-written Unexpected Family 'verse fic, and did some work on my Lewis bigbang, including sorting out a further scene in my head on the plane back. Now all I need to do is type it all up.
I shall post some pictures to Tumblr when SM has downloaded them from his phone. Don't hold your breathe.
