smallhobbitThere are times when I wonder where the powers-that-be are living. The above is one of the challenges for Brownies for their 100th birthday badge. The only other option is undertake some team building exercises. We are talking about 7 to 9 year olds. Granted, some of them might enjoy doing that sort of thing. But has anyone concidered the practicalities.
Sure, if your Brownie pack is based in an affluent area, with lots of facilities near by and parents who can do lots of transporting. Our Brownies aren't poor, but there's no spare cash around. We meet in a community centre, with no outdoor facilities apart from the car park. We don't even have a cupboard to store our stuff, so everything we want to use has to be brought every time.
And even the idea of working as a team is alien. One of the other challenges (compulsory) is to look at the strengths within the six and to come up with a six code of conduct. Once they got the idea they actually enjoyed talking about, and listing, ways that they thought would make Brownies a good place for everyone. In fact that was quite surprising and they seemed to enjoy listening to each other and having the opportunity to make their own contribution.
As for team building: I shall devise an evening of challenges which they have to complete as a team. It's not quite what the powers-that-be had in mind, but for us we're doing something that will work, that the girls will enjoy and hopefully will gain something by doing.
