Yet more drabbles as posted to Life In 1973 weekly drabbles:

Sam woke with a start. Something had touched his hair.

“Dreaming of home again, Sam?” the test card girl asked. “Listening to those who promise that you can go back? They’re fools, promising what they can’t deliver and you’re a fool to listen to them.”

“Oh be quiet,” Sam snapped “it’s not your affair, so you can just leave me alone.”

The girl was shocked to find Sam answering her back. She went back to her noughts and crosses game and Sam firmly switched the TV screen off.

He’d been dreaming about Gene and no-one was going to spoil that!

Festina Lente

If Sam hadn’t been in a rush he would have remembered the pool of water that regularly collected on his kitchen floor. If he hadn’t been in such a hurry he wouldn’t have walked in it in his socks. If he hadn’t charged back to find a clean pair he wouldn’t have fallen over the dustpan (used for clearing up Gene’s fag ends), banging his face when he hit the table. If he hadn’t been concentrating on his nose bleed, he would have seen the apple corer before he trod on it. Gene heard the yell as he drove up.

One Man’s Opinion

Litton glared furiously at the back of Gene Hunt’s head.  What did DI Tyler see in that lazy, beer drinking, chip eating DCI, that he, Derek Litton, head of the RCS, didn’t have?  Litton paused in his mental vindictive to allow himself to imagine running his hands all over Sam’s body.  Tyler had even had the temerity to complain when Litton had taken over the armed robbery case last week, when RCS were clearly better equipped to deal with it.  Litton sighed, he was so obviously the better man, so why was Sam Tyler wasting himself on an inferior person?

Not by the Book

“What are you watching, Chris?”

“There’s a bunny rabbit over in the long grass, Boss.  It looks a bit like the one my sister used to have.”

“And Matthews?”

“Didn’t know he had a rabbit, Boss.”

“I meant, have you seen Matthews?”

“No.  There’s been hardly any movement, except the rabbit.  Oh, and I saw a black cat earlier.”

“Where’s Ray?”

“He’s in the car.  Said he’d had a late night and was feeling a bit sleepy.  Didn’t think it needed two of us to sit here.”

Sam’s exasperated sigh could be heard all the way back at the station.

The Morning After

Chris and Ray were arguing about the previous night’s events as they entered CID.

“How was I supposed to know he would reverse?” complained Ray.

“Are you going to tell him it was our fault?” Chris sounded worried.

“No Chris, and neither are you.”

“But Ray, the Guv will know it wasn’t an accident”

“We’ll blame Tyler, he was supposed to be in charge of it.”

“But he wasn’t even there.”

“Since when has that ever made a difference?”

DCI Hunt’s bellow could be heard through the whole of the station.  “Which div left Tufty behind my car last night?”

The Knifeman

Paperwork complete, Gene returned to the hospital, ‘I’d better just go and check that Tyler’s okay’.  He entered the side ward and looked down at his sleeping DI, pleased to see that his breathing was peaceful at last.  The bastard who had held him hostage at knife point had been charged and was now transferred into the custody of a DCI Barnaby.  Suddenly Sam stirred and started to move his arms as if trying to protect his face.  Gene wrapped his hands round those of the younger man to hold them still.  “Hush Sam, it’s all right.  You’re safe now.”
