Fangirls go to Switzerland

Last weekend I was one of a group of eight Sherlock Holmes fangirls who went to Switzerland to celebrate the famous 'death' of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls on May 4th.
We flew to Zurich and from there took the train to Lucerne and changed onto the Lucerne-Interlaken express, getting off at Meiringen the half way point. From there we took the bus to our villa, which was situated about a mile outside the town centre. The second train journey was punctuated by "look, mountains," "waterfall", "mountain", and repeat. Stunning, very beautiful scenery. The first evening we walked back into the town to eat, getting very wet in the process as it was raining hard. Nevertheless the Chinese/Thai restaurant was very happy to set a table for a party of eight. It was very quiet in the restaurant (apart from our table), which we assumed was due to the weather. However, we realised later we were very early in the season and there were few tourists about.
Saturday morning we woke up and looked out of the bedroom window:

And continued looking for the next ten minutes. And then people began to come downstairs:

And spent a further ten minutes looking out of the window.
After breakfast we walked into the town and took the furnicular railway up the mountain. We emerged from the railway and were instantly drenched by the spray from the waterfall. We walked further up stopping for regular breathers and photo stops until we came to another view of the waterfall.
We were two days early and Holmes and Watson took the other path, but there is no denying the power of the Reichenbach Falls.

Some of our party walked down, but the rest of us took the furnicular back and we met up for a late lunch. Meiringen is the home of meringues and it would have been a shame not to try them out. In the afternoon we stopped at the Sherlock Holmes Museum, which is housed in the old English church. It wasn't very big, and we didn't learn much more than we already knew (although I doubt it was created for the benefit of fangirls), but the recreation of the main room in 221B was excellent and we enjoyed spotting all the little details.
Sunday, after a late brunch (again excellent) we walked along the Aare Gorge. And got wet again. Some of the tunnels let me imagine I was entering Erebor (although there was no sign of Smaug) and part of the walk is on a wooden walkway. Again, terrific views. The Aare was in full flow, having been filled by the water of numerous waterfalls coming from the snow melt. We finished the day by a meal out to celebrate the holiday. I had vegetable rosti which was delicious.
Sadly, we had to return on the Monday. No more mountains, waterfalls and stunning views.
