Book Review the Fourth
Nov. 14th, 2015 10:57 amIt's taken me two and a half months to read my next three books, but it still means I'm reading at least a book a month, so it's all good, and there is a reason why these three took longer.
The Charioteer by Mary Renault
impishtubist recommended this to me a long time ago. I started it, but found it hard to get into, so decided in my 'year of reading everything' I'd make a determined effort to finish it. My problem with the book is that I don't care for the main character, Laurie Odell, and the story is written entirely from his POV. I like Ralph and Andrew and really wanted to enjoy the story of both their relationships with Laurie, but since I had no sympathy for him, I found it hard.
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
I read this because it was the book suggested for my Myers-Briggs personality type. If thet's the case I must be atypical. The blurb on the cover called it 'Martin Scorsese's most passionate and powerful motion picture'. I got to the end, hoping for a final burst of excitement and Nothing Happened. Another story where the main character and only POV, Newland Archer, doesn't appeal to me. Just nope.
Richard III: The Maligned King by Annette Carson

laurose8 and was the one which took me two and a half months to read. Not because it wasn't a good book, I found it very interesting, but it's a densely packed non-fiction work which I read very slowly. There were times when I found the author was trying too hard to argue her point, but generally I appreciated her thoughts. This will be one book from the year which I shall be keeping.
