Matilda

I kept thinking that it would be good to go and see Matilda, and then looking at ticket prices and thinking perhaps not.  But with some of my friends enthusing about how good it was I decided to go for it.  So I tweeted to ask if anyone would be interested in coming with me and was surprised to find so many were keen to do so, which was how I came to be booking eight tickets.  I was especially pleased because it meant that I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] eloquy who I'd be chatting to via twitter for some time.

We all managed to meet for lunch, although two were late, having suffered my usual fate of being stuck on a train.  Fortunately they were on the same train and one had parked at the station so they were able to drive in, so although half an hour late they were about to join us at the Pizza Express.  Where they were happy to serve us, but less prompt to deal with payment.  In the end we left cash on the table, and if it was a few pounds short it was only the service we hadn't paid.

Tickets are very expensive - I'm not sure how people can afford to take children.  We were in the upper circle, but right at the front, so probably had a better view than had we been lower down but seated further back.  It was definitely worth being able to see everything clearly.  The staging is amazing.  The fluidity with which the scenes are changed is excellent, from school room, to library, to the Wormwoods' front room to Matilda's bedroom.  I normally like a performance where there's a possibility for change, and here it's essential that everything is precise, but it works so well and everything flows so fast that it's a delight to watch.

Tasha Chapple, as Matilda (one of four girls who plays that part) was extremely good.  It seems incredible that a nine year old can give such a major performance.  And Alex Gaumond made a fearsome Miss Trunchbull.  It was great entertainment - there were even shadow puppets, which were very effective.

I was really glad I went and would recommend it to anyone who was looking for an afternoon/evening of entertainment.  And of course, meeting up with a whole group of friends is always going to be a great way to spend a Saturday.
