The reason TD and I were in London was because we were going to see Mary Poppins on stage at the Prince Edward Theatre as her birthday present to me.  This is the first time the latest production has been performed in London and it's only recently opened.

It was excellent, the singing was fun, with all the old songs, plus a few new ones, and the audience got to join in the reprieve of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.  The plot is not the same as the film was, although the start and end points are (because they have to be).  That was a real plus, because the audience was kept enthralled by the story.

All the actors were good: Zizi Srallen as Mary Poppins and Charlie Stemp as Bert, together with Joseph Millsom and Amy Griffiths as George and Winifred Banks.  And Petula Clark was the bird woman - she's 87 and she was incredible.

Then there was the dancing: Joshua Denyer brings the statue of Neleus to life with ballet, the tap dancing was excellent and Charlie Stemp was amazing.  I discovered afterwards Matthew Bourne was the choreographer and co-director, so it's no wonder the dancing was good.

This production had all that I require in a musical: story, costumes, singing and dancing and was a great birthday outing.
